I really wanted to make this piece the culmination of my investigation so far. I decided to make the last two pieces depict the positive and negative sides of beauty, and so I plotted out both before starting this work. I really want the work to tie together my investigation. I also wanted my subject to stand out, and my theme to be clear. I drew a person from an angle above, to demonstrate that obsession with beauty is all-consuming. They are below the surface of the water, surrounded by skeletal fish and weeds to show obsession. I also created a focused and contentious color scheme.

I used Sharpie felt-tip pens to create my color scheme. I used reds and purples that clashed a bit for some emotion and to highlight important details.

I experimented a lot with perspective on this piece, as well as with detail levels. I wanted to be true to my style while not distracting from my subject. I also wasn’t sure what to put in the background and ended up cutting out my figures to replace them.
