This is my first attempt at a piece for the Tidal Shift award competition through MECA. I was prompted to create a piece of artwork that addresses climate change, which is a subject I’m really passionate about. I had a lot of ideas, but thought the best course of action was to try and illustrate love of the environment. I think you have to love something to want to protect it. I drew a swing in a backyard with a worn patch of earth to show that the earth supports us as children and raises us in a lot of ways.

I used oil pastels because I love the texture they provide, and I think texture is a huge part of nature. I used exaggerated colors to add a bright, youthful feel.

This piece was experimental for me because I was unsure of how to convey the feeling I wanted to. I think I need to attempt again and pay more attention to composition, imagery, color, etc.
