For this piece, I really wanted to explore how women have been portrayed in art throughout the ages. I think that just by examining art from various cultures and time periods, one can gain a lot of insight into how women were treated and thought of in their societies. My goal was to depict a stand-out female figure from each era we’ve covered in AP Art History and create an animation to show how perceptions of women developed with time (whether negatively or positively). In some of these drawings, women are portrayed as goddesses. In others, they are reduced to their bodies. I think it’s really valuable to note the changes that occur in the female image over time, as portrayed in art predominantly created by men.

I used Blick felt tip pens on bristol paper to create each sketch, then used iMovie to string each clip together and create a short animation. I wanted each drawing to be fairly simple, so it could flow more easily into the next.

Animation is something that is totally new to me. My original idea for this project was very ambitious, and I needed to translate it into something that I could realistically accomplish. I’m really proud of the final result, I think I achieved my goal and created a piece with a strong message! I also had a ton of fun creating it.
