With this project, I wanted to explore the idea of beauty as an idealization. I wanted to create a paradise that serves as a shelter from reality. I conducted my research for this project by examining a few different interpretations of beauty. Many agreed that beauty is pleasure and comfort, in a way that causes agreeable sensations in its audience. I wanted to emphasize that sort of feeling, so I created a haven that is a manifestation of total beauty, but is in and of itself false. This is illustrated in the bright colors and obvious disconnect from reality, as well as the outer shell/curtains on the edge of the piece.
I used Sharpie felt-tip pen to create mystical and tranquil color schemes, gel pen to add detail and even the palette out, Dual-Brush markers, and Blick fine point pens for detail.
I experimented quite a bit with this piece. My goal was to emphasize a clear subject, which I definitely did. However, I definitely added too much detail in the background. I was forced to emphasize my subject using color, but when I got distracted and abandoned by monochrome scheme, I ended up using gel pen to create a sort of screen over certain parts of the image to make other parts stand out. I also cut out pieces of paper to redo certain aspects of the piece.
