With this work, I really wanted to push myself to explore new materials.  I’ve used linoleum block printing a few times before and really enjoyed it, so I decided to experiment further and see if I could create the same depth with this material as I’ve been able to with pens or pastels.  The theme of the piece is the phrase “the old ball and chain,” and I wanted to show an exaggerated perception of this idea that reflects how a child may view it.

I used red ink because I thought it reflected passion and love, which contrasted with the sort of comical feel of the scene.  I went in with silver to emphasize bonds such as the rings and the chains.

I’m not super happy with the result of this piece, I don’t think the white background works well.  I’ve done some printing on a green background which I really like, and am working towards finalizing a piece with a darker backdrop.  This makes the imagery pop, and I’m excited to see the final result.
