Scaffito

For this project, we were instructed on how to make a scraffito tile. It was difficult for me to come up with an idea for what i wanted to do for this piece because i have very little experience in this kind of art. I wanted to do something that combined the elements of clay, that being water and earth. i eventually decided on the figure of a woman drowning in the clay. I felt that this image portrayed exactly what i wanted my piece to be because it combined earth, water, and humanity.

i started this piece by transferring my sketch onto a clay slab. this, i found to be somewhat challenging because when i did it, the clay still have some moisture in it and ended up being quite squishy. however, i managed to get a transferred sketch that i was somewhat satisfied with and from there I went in and began carving away the large areas of white on my clay. i finished this piece by adding the details of the bubbles and hair. x
