Assemblage Sculpture

Infested By the Headlines

For this piece, we were instructed to make a sculpture using different materials. I started by trying to come up with an idea for the meaning of my piece. I ended looking up photos of different insects, looking to explore the concept of infestation in our daily lives. I then started to think about how our society is so heavily fixated on the tragedy in the news. This gave me the idea to do the sculpture of a moth using newspaper and magazine clippings. I wanted to show, that like a moth drawn towards light, society is drawn towards the horrors in the headlines. i started this piece by sketching out the shape of a moth in 2d. i then cut up several pieces of cardboard into the desired 2d shape. then, using tape, glue, newsprint, and duct tape, and added onto the cardboard to make the sculpture 3 dimensional. This was significantly more challenging than i had anticipated because the glue did not want to bond the cardboard together. this made it difficult to attach the wings. When i finally finished putting together and securing everything, i started covering the shape with news clippings. This was also difficult, because it took an extremely long time for the glue to dry. i finished the piece by cutting up tiny scraps of newspaper and gluing them down to give the impression of the moth having a fuzzy body and antennae.
