Artist's statement:

For this piece, i really wanted to draw something that meant something to me. I had a lot of pictures of myself, or landscapes, but the only thing I could think of that I wanted to draw was my best friend. i wanted to draw them because i enjoy drawing things that express emotions, and i never feel happier than when i am laughing with them. I asked when if they would be ok with me drawing them, and they said yes.

I started this piece by making a grid, and sketching out my basic outline. I then went in with several different kinds of charcoal, and tried to give the face depth. after i added as much depth as i could, i went in and added some details.

i found this piece very challenging because i have always done large, rough, sketch like, strokes when i draw. charcoal limited my ability to do that, and made the details far more difficult to draw.
