My artwork was guided by the ideas of modern life on the planet Mars. The great god Mars, trained in the art of war, is very similar to the combative play styles that many humans take when playing hit game “Among Us” with friends and soon-to-be enemies. The red crewmate has risen once more, ready to seek revenge on those who cast him aside. Is he friend, or foe? The viewer is left uncertain, the crewmate cast in shadow in a foreign achromatic landscape, the crewmate himself coated in red, a pop of color on the already red planet that has lost its color. Yes, I am aware that I spelled "Risen" incorrectly. Yes, I am in an AP English class. Let's not talk about it.
This piece was made with a ballpoint pen over a graphite sketch and I also used some colored pencils to color the crewmate. I used the drawing paper provided, and that’s it. I did some pen because I had extra time at the end of class and golly gee I have no clue how to do cross-hatching! It sure is a mess.
I looked up some pictures of Mars for reference, and oh boy do I have no clue what I am doing!! I’ve never drawn landscapes before, and I think the depth of the shadows and jagged and sandy edges of a random planet perhaps worked against me. I’ve always done art in a less technical sense, and this was an anguished attempt at technique. I was also listening to some rad music as usual while drawing this so I may have paid less attention to my drawing that I ought to.
