Sgraffito

Clay and Black Glaze

He's Fine

This was our first project, where we were getting used to how the water content in the clay affects workability. Using a top layer of ink, and scraping off pieces to create an image using negative space.

We used clay, which was fine, and ink, which I hate to use on clay. I just think it looks icky, which is my own problem. The materials were difficult to use because I am impatient, and I needed to let this piece dry before carving.

Because I did not allow enough time for my piece to dry, I had difficulty keeping my lines straight, and ended up absolutely mutilating my little guy, which sucked. It's alright though, I got practice and now I know how to do scraffito if I want to do it again, and I think the teeth ended up ok. Next time I will make a more thorough draft of where my values are so I'm not making it up as I go, which is part of why the piece is so inconsistent.
