Drawing Tutorials

Over our last semester of Senior Engineering we worked on doing drawing tutorials to help us better understand and learn how to sketch our designs and ideas for our CAPSTONE project. We learned various different types of sketching concepts and with that we were able to draw more efficiently and accurately, even when we drew free-hand sketches. The various types of concepts we have covered include; perspective drawings, orthographic and isometric, and with that we learned elements to compose each type. Here are images of my notes and work:

Key Concepts and Terms:

  • Perspective Sketch: is a technique to create the linear illusion of depth. As objects get further away from the viewer they appear to decrease in size at a constant rate.

  • Orthographic Sketch (or Projection): is a means of representing three-dimensional objects in two dimensions. It is a form of parallel projection, in which all the projection lines are orthogonal to the projection plane, resulting in every plane of the scene appearing in affine transformation on the viewing surface.

  • Isometric Sketch (or Projection): is a method for visually representing three-dimensional objects in two dimensions in technical and engineering drawings. It is an axonometric projection in which the three coordinate axes appear equally foreshortened and the angle between any two of them is 120 degrees.

          • Other key terms in sketches: vertices, midpoints, vanishing points, lines, planes, ghost lines, center lines, section lines, hidden lines, visible lines, etc. (see more in my notes and drawings)

Reflection:

I enjoyed learning to sketch, as drawing has always been a passion of mine. I also learned how and why learning these drawing concepts was so important to the engineering design cycle process, through these drawing tutorial assignments. This semester I'm looking forward to our 3D modeling tutorials on CAD, because this is a new level of engineering that I don't have any previous experience in. I'm also excited to learn more about it and how to navigate through these kinds of softwares. The 2 6C's this applied to were Critical Thinking and Conscientious Learning which I both excelled in and also need more growth in for this semester.
