Homeostasis lab

Evidence of Work:

In this lab we tested a specific type of homeostasis and ran specific tests on it relating to the type of homeostasis. My group chose temperature homeostasis and we wanted to know if eating spicy or cold food. Temperature homeostasis is when your body maintains it's average temperature which is around 98.6° and if it gets too hot or cold it reacts in order to maintain the average temperature. And in our experiment we ate Hot Cheetos until we felt it got really spicy for us and took our temperature and compared it to initial temperature, we did the same with ice cream in a separate trial. And we did end up seeing a change in our temperatures from this experiment from both of the foods.

Temperature Homeostasis

Content:

  • Homeostasis: Is the tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.

  • Temperature Homeostasis: Temperature Homeostasis also known as Thermoregulation is a process that allows your body to maintain its core internal temperature.

  • Introduction: We were given the task of finding out if your temperature will change when eating spicy or cold food while maintaining homeostasis.. We decided that we could prove this most efficiently by recording our temperature after eating. We measured our temperature before and after eating our test foods and related it to Homeostasis.

  • Hypothesis: If we eat spicy or cold food then our temperature will change due to homeostasis.

  • Materials: Head Thermometer, Hot Cheetos, and Vanilla Ice Cream

  • Procedure: (1) Take initial temperature, (2) Eat spicy food, (3) Then take post temperature repeat several times, (4) Take initial temperature, (5) Eat cold food, (6) Take post temperature, and repeat for two more trials.

  • Observations: Some observations include: when eating spicy and cold foods the temperature changes weren’t sudden, sometimes we measure temperature at the wrong times giving off the wrong temperature, and with spicy food you tend to sweat a bit, and with cold food you get brain freeze.

  • Abstract: Objective- The objective of this lab was to see how our body maintains homeostasis through consuming spicy and cold foods. Design- The focus group was monitored throughout six trials of different times before and after consuming the different types of food. Subjects- The focus group consisted of three, sophomores in high school. Variables Measured- The variables taken into account was the temperature before and after consuming the foods and effect of consuming spicy and cold foods on our temperature. Analysis- The data was analyzed with 2 graphs one as the spicy temperature graph and another one as the cold food graph. Results- Temperature is extremely dependent on the individual, but is still increased/decreased after the consumption of cold and spicy foods. Implications- An individual’s health is the main factor of temperature, is dependent on how sensitive they are of spicy and cold foods. Key Words- Temperature, initial temperature and post temperature.

  • Discussion: Somethings we could improve on and did well include: Having a better plan on time, and a planned out procedure. We also should have tested our thermometers. And possibly have a variety of food. But, We worked well together as a team and had a very effective way at recording our data. And a well sought out plan.

Reflection:

This lab was really fun for me because we got to choose what we were going to do and how we were going to do it. And as mentioned before in the discussion we could have improved our execution better but we did pretty well for the most part. And because of the whole planning out part and the fact that we came up with the lab on our own I think used Critical Thinking well as a group. I also think we used the Communication skill well since we were all able to plan who was to bring what. A skill we could've worked on better was Conscientious Leaner because we weren't able to finish the whole lab with the time we had, and we did have a problem with the specific food we had chosen. But overall, we carried out this project pretty well and I had a lot of fun working on it.
