For our capstone project, we created an oversized version of the San Marin logo, outlined with LED lights to boost school spirit and energize game-day events. We built the base from plywood, painted it in school colors, and added LED strips to make the sign stand out and capture attention. Our goal was to enhance the atmosphere at school events while proudly representing San Marin.
As a two-person team, the project required a lot of dedication and collaboration. We handled everything—from measuring and cutting to painting and wiring—on our own. In steps 5 through 7, we focused on building and completing the main sign. Step 8 marked the start of our tech integration, where we began experimenting with an Arduino and sound sensor to make the lights react to crowd noise during big moments. While still in progress, we're excited about the potential this feature adds.
Prototype: A first, typical or preliminary model of something, especially a machine, from which other forms are developed or copied.
Survey: A general view, examination, or description of someone or something. We surveyed fellow students to get insight on what they would like to see in our device. We plan on making more surveys and gathering more data from a broader group of people.
Mentor: An experienced and trusted adviser to help develope your project.
Functionality: The quality of being suited to serve a purpose well; practicality.
As a two-person team, we had to manage our time and resources carefully. We stayed on schedule by dividing tasks efficiently and planning each step with intention. Our focus on precision—especially in measuring, cutting, and assembling—helped us create a clean, professional, and visually striking final product that reflected our pride in the school.
This project also helped me identify areas for growth, particularly in communication and collaboration. While we worked well together, I realized the importance of being more proactive in sharing ideas and regularly checking in to stay aligned. Strengthening these skills will benefit me in future group work. Overall, I’m proud of the effort and craftsmanship we put in, and it was incredibly rewarding to see our vision become a reality.
