This project was programming based and it required us to create a game from scratch and it had to be either a FPS or a Racing game We got given the project on the 22nd January 2024 and we had to complete it by the 28th April 2024.
At the beginning of the project I did quite a lot of research for the game and we decided that we would make it western themed but set it in the future which gave the game a unique setting. I created some moodboards and I wrote my ideas onto the MIro board for the whole team to see. I got to work on some programming and after that I did some 3D modelling and I feel like my skills improved due to that.
I was hoping for this project to further enhance my skills and I feel like I have accomplished that. Due to this being a first year attempt at creating a game we didn't expect it to be perfect but we certainly do have the fundamentals for a fun and enjoyable game.
At the start of the project, I did struggle a little with the programming as I didn't have much experience in that sector , however, after watching a few tutorials on YouTube I began to get the hang of it quite quickly. I also struggled with GitHub and I would still say I'm not very comfortable with it but I'm sure I will be eventually.
The main issue I had with the project was probably using GitHub but I would also say that the teamwork was very poor and even though we did the project went well overall the lack of communication felt very clear in my opinion. I would say though that even though the cohesion wasn't really there mostly everyone worked hard and mostly everyone got on with it.
To complete this project I used an array of different software that includes: GitHub, Miro, Blender and Unreal Engine. Whilst doing the project I also was updating my portfolio to keep track of the progress I made and so whenever someone wanted to check what I have done they could.
I learnt quite a lot in the programming aspect of it all as I pretty much had 0 experience beforehand and watching some tutorials on YouTube really helped me with a lot of it. I also feel like I made my two most detailed models yet with the dart and the combat knife as I put a of of details into it to make it look as realistic as possible.
If I could've I would've wanted to do more things within Unreal Engine however within the team I feel like everything was already either done or getting worked on within the programming side and no one really 3D modelled so I took it on myself to create some models.
In conclusion I believe that the project went well overall however there were quite a few areas that could be greatly improved, especially when it came to teamwork as I honestly don't think anyone really spoke to eachother and due to that we probably got held back a little bit.
