To start off with, we created a mood board to think of some ideas. We quickly noticed some common themes between the images such as everywhere is abandoned (obviously) and that even though the world is in total chaos, it still manages to seem quite peaceful as nature has taken over the cities and reclaimed the land and therefore there is a lot of green. We also analysed the colours to get a sense of what we need to work with and what sort of assets would fit with the theme! I also used some images from the AMC hit show: The Walking Dead. I did this because I am more familiar with it than The Last of Us and they are quite similar so I can use that to help us. I also did this because The Walking Dead does a really good job at showing how desolate and depressing the world really is and the name 'The Last of Us' makes me think of how empty the world is so I can interlink them!
We then created a few mind maps which we used to get some ideas for other aspects of the project. In the top left, we have a mind map to decide on the location of the scene. We ended up having 6 main proposals: a house, a hospital, a supermarket, a cargo boat, a warehouse and a factory, all abandoned! We then expanded on the mind map and described what sort of environment we would be dealing with for each so we had an even clearer picture of each and we could make an informed decision. We ended up choosing an abandoned warehouse, it would have shelves full of items such as weapons and food. It would be big, open and full of clutter! We then decided the age rating would be 16 as even though there isn;t much gore or violence, it could still make younger audiences frightened. We also discussed camera angles for our shots so we could display our scene with the best view!
On the top left, you can see the famous actor Cillian Murphy playing the character 'Jim' in the movie 28 Days Later. You can also see probably the most famous shot from the TV Series 'The Walking Dead' where Rick Grimes is riding a horse in the city of Atlanta in Georgia, USA. I have took inspiration from these because as you can see in both images it is desolate and nobody is around. This shows how empty the world is and on the top right image you can see everyone leaving the city and no one is going towards it. I have also chosen to take inspiration from the Call of Duty: Zombie's map, Mob of the Dead. In the storyline they are trapped in the cycle of having to survive the zombie outbreak and no matter what they do the cycle won't break. This is similar to the situation the people that are trying to survive will be in because no matter how many zombies they kill more will just keep coming and coming.
We made a Google forms to gather primary information for our project. This was so we knew what people thought about the game so we could get other peoples perspectives as well! Some of the questions might seem stupid but that is the point!!! If they answer the easy questions wrong then why would we use their answers when they don't have even the most basic knowledge.
These are the questions I put on the survey! I used other pieces of media that correlates with The Last of Us such as Jim from the movie 28 Days Later as they are similar so it could confuse people and as I said I want to use the answers from people who know what they are talking about else their advice is pointless!
These answers are really detailed and due to this we will be taking the feedback and trying our best to implement it into our work to improve the quality.
At the top, you can see the floor plan that I created for the apocalyptic scene. As I said before, we are setting it inside of a warehouse from The Last of Us! I researched warehouses and took inspiration from some of the pictures I saw, especially the Amazon warehouses, as we are loosely basing ours off of them! Even though I have made the floor plan I don't want to strictly follow the it as I don't want to contain myself to one idea as then we wouldn't be able to let it naturally grow the further along we get! My partner also made a work plan so we knew what we needed to do and when we needed to do it so we can stay on track and organised.
After we did the survey to gather some primary data, we drew up our first concept drawings to get a visual representation of what we would be inserting into our scene! We drew up some of the basic assets we would be using over and over and copying and pasting such as wooden pallets. We would obviously need them as there is probably up to hundreds or even thousands of pallets in a warehouse at one given time so they were one of our fundamental assets! Harry then drew a wooden box which we could use as somewhere items could be stored and it would fit the warehouse vibe well. You wouldn't be able to do much in a big building like a warehouse without ladders so we drew a concept design of them which we could base our block outs and final models on! We obviously had to include shelves as there needed to be a place to store all the boxes and pallets! We also designed a door because we didn't want it to be a room with no exit as that would be very unrealistic and we added a forklift because people don't have super-strength so they can't move all the boxes. I decided to include Negan's infamous bat, Lucille, from The Walking Dead as an easter egg as the show influenced us.[
