In this brief we were given the scenario we had to work with. We got given some information at the top to give us some contextual knowledge so we knew everything we had to factor in and make sure it all checks out. Ultimately, we chose team flight as we thought it would give us more ideas we could play around with. The fact that it had a time limit made us work under pressure and due to this it would really test our skills more than anything else has as of yet. We ended up having of a team of 4 people with an additional 2 year twos to mentor us and help us get it to the best possible quality. Once we were finished we were required to do a hero shot which had all of our creations in a few photos (or an animation if you wanted to be fancy!)
To start off with, we had a few ideas that we were discussing, our first idea was Space Pirates which me and another member quite disliked. Once we talked about it we scrapped the idea and started talking about a ghost ship but quickly realised it wouldn't fit the criteria of a fleet! We finally decided on a futuristic ship with biodomes as we though it would be a good design and the easiest way to explain how we'd get food, water etc without using the excuse of sci-fi magic!
We googled our idea and had a look at some already existing pictures. This gave us some fresh ideas with also helping us with our pre-existing ideas and gave us a larger vision for the fleet. For the main ship (mothership) we took quite a bit of inspiration from the S.H.I.E.L.D helicarrier from the original Avengers movie and the biodome aspect was taken from the Eden Project in Cornwall, England and the iconic Call of Duty: Zombies map Moon!
For the resources we decided that we would be self-sustaining as it would fit the whole futuristic and eco-friendly characteristics of the ship. For the food we would grow it in the five biodomes we would have on the mothership and genetically modify some of it to make the food production increase in scale but decrease in time. For the power source of the ship we thought that it would make sense for solar energy to power the ship as there is always solar energy from the untold amount of stars in the universe and as a backup we would use biofuel where we would burn the food and turn it into energy. For the ships to be repaired we decided that there would mini maintenance ships that would repair any ship in the fleet! For the oxygen we decided that it would come from all the plants in the biodomes but in the middle of the main, big biodome there would be an absolutely ginormous tree which we later nicknamed the 'Tree of Life' where most of the oxygen would be produced. However, we didn't really have a target planet as we had to quickly rush off of earth therefore we didn't have time to find one so the main reason we made it self-sustaining is because we never knew how long we would be out in space for and we needed to make sure the people that reside in the ship had enough resources to survive for an unknown amount of time!
This ship would hold one main biodome with two smaller secondary biodomes and will house a decent amount of people and wildlife. This is where we first came up with the concept that different biodomes will be home to different environments.
This is the concept for the main ship which has 4 small biodomes with one big, elongated biodome. This is the ship we loosely based off of the avengers helicarrier.
These ships were based off of Star Wars. The small cargo ship (left) is based off of the Republic Gunship combined with a Space Shuttle and the right was loosely based off of the Rebel Alliance CR90 Corvette.
To begin with, we made the very first biodome and on the image to the left you can read how Morgan created it using the 3d software, Blender. We also made an engine which we could use for multiple ships just by copy and pasting it then scaling it for size.
After reviewing the reference images and the concepts we finalised the design and Morgan started 3d modelling it. If you compare the model to the concepts you can see that we stuck to it and didn't try to change it up too much. We used 4 biodomes for the four corners but put one in the middle and made it taller and also stretched it!
I made a concept for an astronaut which we didn't end up making but either way it is good to throw some ideas around so you can have some options of what to do with your design! I also made a crate just to have a few props so the ships didn't feel empty!
Another member of our team made a logo for the team which was named 'Project Evo'.
These ships were made for the people that were less wealthy and they just kind of tagged along with all the rich people. On the image you can read how David designed it!
I made these props using the basic modelling tools on Blender. Some of these props include a tree, turret, mounted turret and a control panel! I also made these so the ships didn't feel as empty! (Disclaimer: I only had 2 3d modelling lessons before this therefore they weren't the best in the world)
This ship was made so we could drill the water out of space rocks so we had something to drink and they would operate within a certain radius of the mothership so if something went wrong a rescue mission was feasible.
On Wednesday, we presented our fleet to Tim Ceesay and Philip Mervik! They both work for TT Games which have produced mega-hits such as Lego Star Wars and Lego Batman. Tim first started out at SmashMouth Games as a studio manager in 2009 but left in 2012 and did freelancing jobs for 4 months until he started working at TT Games and has been there ever since! He was a construction artist but got promoted to lead construction artist until he started working as lead technical designer from 2018 up until now! Philip Mervik has been a construction manager for TT Games from 2009 up until now and is credited for games such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens! These guys clearly have a lot of experience and after listening to our presentation they gave us this feedback!
-Unique focal point of the design with the biodomes but make it the main part of the ship e.g. the power source.
-Work on scaling, its hard to know the size of something without comparing it to something else.
-If you can't draw very well for the designs then photobash to present it more clearly.
-They loved the biodomes and thought it was a brilliant idea for a spaceship!
For the mothership we made the glass clear so you could see inside the ship and this would be useful later when we would add props to it and with props inside it then we would have a better sense of scale!
This is our design for our Medium Sized ships which is used primarily for accommodation. it has one alrge biodome and two smaller biodomes at the back. It was based off of the original concepts but changed the shape slightly as the first ones kind of looked like Among Us characters and we couldn't unsee it.
I made EVEN more props including, a cactus. a cherry bush and a pile of snowballs! For the throne, I took the button panel off of the control desk and rotated it to put it on the throne! For the ship and the large helicarrier I photo bashed the images to make the designs clearer!
For the large cargo ship Cayden followed my concept and it was quite cylindrical but Kennedy helped him finish it up and give him a little bit more of a boxed shape.
This is before we added the props into the mothership. We took pictures from every angle so you can see every single part of the mothership and it gives you a better picture of the overall shape.
I textured the tree I made earlier on in the week to make it look more realistic and to add more detail. I created skyscrapers that are apartment blocks for a lot of people to reside in. The middle ship is the small cargo ship that I based off of my original concept.
We put some of our models inside the main biodome and made it seem like there was an actual civilisation inside the biodome instead of a whole lot of nothing. We added a huge tree in the middle which was nicknamed 'The Tree of Life'.
We created different environments for the smaller biodomes including: water, desert and tundra! We added cacti into the desert biome and a dead tree into the tundra. We also added lots of people into the main bio dome!
We added an animation that gives you a tour around the ship so you can get a look around the different biodomes and see what it looks like form the outside.
We added the galaxy to create a background for the ships so it felt less empty and to make everyone know that we are long gone from Earth and far into their voyage to find a new planet to inhabit.
