Week 35

(Module 5 Topic 1 Lesson 1 - 2: Statistical Process & Data Displays)

Learning objective = Students engage in the four components of a statistical process. Given a real-world situation, they write statistical questions, collect data, create an appropriate display to analyze the data, and interpret the results. They use a graphic organizer to summarize their process. Students consider categorical data displayed using bar graphs and circle graphs.

Parents can support learning at home by helping students connect this week’s lesson to real-life examples and practice explaining their thinking. Encourage your child to explain each step aloud rather than simply memorize a rule = SAMPLE TEST QUESTIONS + MORE QUESTIONS

***If your child needs more challenge, they can move at a faster pace by using this site to study the concepts of future lessons. Mr. Pierre will strive to prepare lessons two weeks ahead of the current week. Also, Khan Academy is a great enrichment resource***

Data Collection and Analysis: SciGirls | Bee Haven | Grades 3-5, 6-8 Understanding Samples to Gain Understanding of Populations (Grade 7) Teaching and Lesson ResourcesSampling is an important mathematical technique to learn information about a population by examining a sample of the population. The SciGirls count a sample of the plants resources available for their bees in Phoenix and then draw inferences about the amount of resources available in the larger city.

Statistics: Wet Heads | Grades 6-8, 13+ Anticipating Variability With Statistical Questions (Grade 6) Teaching and Lesson ResourcesUsing this resource group, teachers can focus on the topic of statistics by having students construct stem and leaf plots based on how estimations compare with actual data. Students learn to create stem and leaf plots and back-to-back stem and leaf plots to display data collected from an investigative activity. This resource group is part of the Mathline Middle School Math Project.

How to Spot Statistics without Context That Spread Misinformation | Be MediaWise | Grades 6-8, 9-12 Evaluating Supported and Unsupported Claims (Grade 6) Teaching and Lesson ResourcesThis lesson will help students recognize potentially false data or statistics presented without context in online posts. Students will study how the MediaWise Teen Fact-Checking Network debunked a tweet from a Congressional staffer about President Biden's Executive Order canceling student debt and the impact of inflation. Students will also be able to analyze how data and statistics are manipulated to make misinformation more credible, how to find original sources of data, and answer the following questions: Why is the context behind data or statistics important to know? What are some red flags that data shared online may be unreliable? How can I effectively fact-check data that is shared online?
