Balancing Equations with Multiple Terms | Cyberchase | Grades K-2, 3-5 Comparing Numbers of Grouped Objects (Grade K) Teaching and Lesson Resources
In this video segment from Cyberchase, Inez and Digit are attempting to gain access to a machine in order to save Sensible Flats from disaster. First, they must balance a scale to get the correct numeric access code. In order to do that they have to balance a scale using four weights on each side. They soon learn that adding or removing the same weight from each side does not upset the balance of the scale.
Solving an Equation for a Missing Value | Cyberchase | Grades 3-5 Solving Multistep Problems and Representing With Equations (Grade 4) Teaching and Lesson Resources
In this video segment from Cyberchase, the CyberSquad must figure out the correct number code to unlock a machine. They have two numbers on one side, but are missing one of the numbers on the other side. The sum of the numbers must be equal on each side, so by subtracting the same number from each side they are able to determine the missing number.
Piano Tuning and Balancing Equations | Grades 3-5, 6-8 Line Plots Teaching and Lesson Resources
Examine how one innovator is working to improve the way concert pianos are designed and tuned. This video focuses on the balance that needs to occur in an ideally tuned piano key and explores how David Stanwood calculated the balance range through data analysis of measurements and ratios, taking math out of the classroom and into real world problem solving.
Solving Simultaneous Linear Equations | Grades 6-8 Algebraic Solutions and Graphing of Two Linear Equations With Two Variables (Grade 8) Teaching and Lesson Resources
In this video, learn the elimination method for solving two simultaneous linear equations in a real-world context. In the accompanying classroom activity, students watch the video, solve a pair of simultaneous linear equations, and write a word problem to fit the equations. In order to facilitate introduction to and practice with the elimination method, students work with simple linear equations. To get the most from this lesson, students should be comfortable solving linear equations in one variable, presented as real-world and algebraic problems.
Understanding Solutions to Linear Equations | Grades 6-8 Exemplifying One-Variable, One-Solution Linear Equations (Grade 8) Teaching and Lesson Resources
In this video, explore linear equations in one variable with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no solutions. In the accompanying classroom activity, students watch the video and then write and solve three equations: one with one solution, one with infinitely many solutions, and one with no solutions. They trade with a partner and solve each other’s equations. To get the most from this lesson, students should be comfortable solving linear equations in one variable with one solution.
