Points are used as visual identifiers of progress in sports, reward cards, and also in video games. Badges display achievement, whether from service in the military or a gold star on your school report card. Leaderboards are used across sports, sales teams and in general life to present competitive placement.
Psychology is present in any activity that requires thought, behavioral patterns and motivation, so just about anything. That means that gamification, which is deeply entrenched in all three of these ideals, is a concept that is fueled by psychological principles. The psychology of gamification is based on five key principles.
Number one, it gives the user control. In any gamified learning environment, setting up the parameters for your students to get from point A to point B is the desired goal of the teacher. It's part of the student journey. However, simple psychology tells us that people don't like to be forced or they're dragged into the destination. They like to be masters of their own destiny. Most people like to feel in control, so make it seem like they are in the driving seat. Remember those old books where you could choose your own adventure? It's kind of like that. So in your classroom, it's no different. You can set up different paths for students to take.
Number two, progress maps help users know where they are and where they're going. Again, this is simple psychology. We like to know where we're going. We like to know where we are in the process as well. Otherwise, we're in the dark growing increasingly wary. Something as simple as a progress bar acts kind of like a map for your students. They know where they are in the process. They know how far they've got to go, and it concludes milestones of achievement along the way, even better. It breaks up the journey and it makes it seem more manageable. Again, this is a great student experience if you set it up this way.
Number three, competition in ourselves and against others. Humans are competitive by nature. Most of us want to push ourselves further and harder. By using personal bests and previous records, you can convince your users, your students, to come back and try and try again. Again, this is the driving factor behind the popularity of things like fitness apps. Show us our own statistics and we'll almost always want to beat it.
There's a lot of stigma surrounding leaderboards. In my experience though, I've never really encountered students who question this method. Mostly they just care about themselves, their own progress, and if they're leading in front of their friends. Use your best judgment though in your classroom setting, but this can be a powerful tool of motivation to be at the top of the leaderboard. Be creative in how you design your leaderboards as well. Don't just make it purely academic. Make it fun.
Number four, humans love to explore and escape. The whole reason we love video games is for their escapism, getting lost in role-playing worlds and exploring altered states. When you give your users, the students, the freedom to explore, it creates intrigue and excitement, two very powerful emotions, and a positive user experience. Of course, this exploration should be carefully structured so that students don't get lost.
Number five, teamwork and collaboration. Another key psychological driver is community and collaboration. We are social animals, which is why we love multiplayer games and screaming down headsets at people all over the world. This translates well to gamification. If you can make users, students, feel like they're part of a team or community on their journey, you'll create loyalty and a positive user experience.
We love rewards. This is one that almost doesn't need any explanation. Everyone loves rewards. We've already talked about creating a sense of achievement, but why not go one step forward and offer a real tangible reward? The classroom can use this type of reward design as well. By rewarding students at each stage of the journey, it can reinforce what you want them to do. Understanding basic psychology and motivating students is really quite simple. Creating a system where students can level up, gain rewards, receive feedback, and achieve something in return, is the foundation for creating a successful gamified classroom. These elements create a dopamine rush in the brain. By doing things again and again and again because it feels good is why gamification works so well in a classroom setting.
Any educator and researcher will tell you that students learn much better when they are motivated. Recent studies have explored what makes video games so addictive. Gamification is more likely to be successful today because students are more willing to be active participants in its implementation. They naturally gravitate toward the aesthetics of games and immediately understand and respect their mechanics and rules.
With the advent of video games that have returned in full force as a cultural product with more people in North America consuming video games than movies and music, in point of fact, 58% of Americans play video games. 45% of gamers are women, and 58% of parents play video games with their kids as a way to socialize with them. Games are part of the cultural landscape, and they aren't going anywhere. With that in mind, it makes sense to want to bring gaming into the classroom to gamify learning. Teaching is all about relating to kids' experiences and tying them to that course matter.
What keeps them so engaged though? The game itself and the storyline is one aspect, but that's not what billions of dollars of research and development has been put into video games from companies that keep people coming back playing for long periods of time. It's the need for getting to that next level, gathering the needed coins, leveling up your character, getting new gear for your avatar. The list goes on and on and on. In every game, there is intrinsic value and, as well, extrinsic value. You work hard to beat certain milestones and you earn certain achievements. So why can't our classrooms look like this? Why can't we engage students in a way that parallels the same concepts of game theory? It can be done, but it requires a large vision to build a classroom setting where every aspect revolves around this game setting that you're desiring to create, based on the psychology of gamification and motivational theory.
