We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we gather today -
The Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation and pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Dear God, our loving Creator,
We thank you for our beautiful land, Australia, and for the First Peoples
who have cared for it for a very long time. We remember that they were
here first, and we are grateful for their wisdom and stories.
Sometimes, in the past, things were not fair or kind. We feel sad about
the mistakes that were made.
During Reconciliation Week, we want to learn, listen, and understand.
Help us to be good friends to everyone.
Help us to share, to be kind, and to make sure everyone feels safe, respected, and included. Guide us to build a future where we all walk together, hand in hand, with respect and understanding.
Lord hear our prayer

Dear Families,
We are now officially halfway through Term 2, the term is flying by!
Firstly, I would like to acknowledge that some of our families are going through an incredibly difficult time following the recent loss of loved ones. On behalf of the entire STM community, we extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers. We hope these families find strength, comfort and support in the days ahead.
It’s really important that we all do our best to wear the correct uniform, especially when we're out and about representing STM. I've chatted with the staff, and they'll be helping to keep an eye on this.
National Reconciliation Week – 27 May to 3 June
This week marks National Reconciliation Week, a significant time for all Australians to reflect on our shared history and take steps toward building a more just, equitable, and reconciled nation.
The theme for Reconciliation Week this year is “Now More Than Ever”, reminding us that the work of reconciliation is far from over, and that every action, big or small, makes a difference. It’s a time to honour the histories, cultures, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and to acknowledge the truths of the past so we can move forward together.
Here at STM, we are committed to fostering a community where respect, understanding, and connection are at the heart of everything we do. During this week, we have encouraged everyone, students, staff, and families, to take the opportunity to learn, reflect, and consider how each of us can contribute to reconciliation in meaningful and respectful ways.
TRP
STM continues to proudly implement The Resilience Project. A reminder that there are fantastic resources available through the Parent & Carer Hub, which we encourage all families to explore:

2026 Prep
I have now completed enrolment interviews for our 2026 Prep families. Letters of offer will be sent out this week, and we are very much looking forward to partnering with these families as they begin their child’s educational journey with us.
Community Engagement
It has also been wonderful to see families attending our Learning Showcases. This week, it was fantastic to see our Year 1 and Prep students engaging in some very interesting science experiences alongside their families. These moments truly highlight the value of family involvement in student learning, and we thank you for taking the time to be part of these special experiences.
A special shoutout to our Year 4 and 5 students who have been visiting HE Kane Kindergarten. They’ve been doing a wonderful job supporting the younger children, and it’s been fantastic to see their confidence grow through this initiative.
Year 6
Next week, our Year 6 students will be heading off to Phillip Island for their much-anticipated camp. This is always such a memorable and rewarding experience for our students. A sincere thank you to the staff who will be accompanying and supporting them over the three days.
Also, a reminder that the STM Grade 6 Coburg Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser is happening this Saturday, 31 May. If you’re in the area, please consider dropping by to support this important initiative. All funds raised will go directly towards supporting our Year 6 students.
Parent Helpers
I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Parent Helpers who have been supporting in classrooms this term. Your time and effort are very much appreciated. We love working in partnership with you to support the learning and growth of our students.
District Cross Country
Best of luck to our District Cross Country runners, who will compete on Wednesday 4 June. We are incredibly proud of you — run your hearts out and enjoy the day!
Please note the following upcoming dates:
Monday 9 June – King’s Birthday Public Holiday (no school)

Dear Parents and Guardians,
This letter provides an update regarding changes to student reporting in Mathematics, following the recent publication of the revised Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) Mathematics curriculum (Mathematics 2.0).
St Thomas More will implement the Mathematics 2.0 curriculum for all school reports commencing in Semester 1, 2025.
In previous reports, your child's teacher assessed and reported against the three distinct strands of the Mathematics achievement standard:
Number and Algebra
Measurement and Geometry
and Statistics and Probability
With the introduction of Mathematics 2.0, reporting will now reflect the achievement standard as a whole, resulting in a single, overall score.
As the basis for reporting achievement standards has shifted, the initial report you receive this semester under the Mathematics 2.0 framework will indicate your child's achievement at that point in time. Subsequent reports will then demonstrate progress against this single, integrated achievement standard.
The VCAA has implemented these changes to enhance teachers' capacity to plan and deliver their mathematics programs. This revised structure offers greater flexibility in connecting mathematical concepts and integrating them with other areas of the curriculum, ultimately supporting student learning.
For more detailed information, we encourage you to consult the department’s policy on Reporting Student Achievement and Progress Foundation to 10.
Should you have any specific questions about your child’s report, please do not hesitate to contact the school, Sonia Mazzei, or your child’s classroom teacher directly.
Yours sincerely,
Sonia Mazzei - Learning & Teaching Leader
This week, try using this GEM Chat question at home to help your child reflect on their habits and build connections.
Dear Parents,
Just a reminder to explore the Parent Hub, which offers valuable resources for you to access at home: https://theresilienceproject.com.au/2025-parent-carer-hub-inspire-3/
We know that parents and carers often prioritise the health and wellbeing of others before their own.
It’s really important to practise regular self-care, The Resilience Project hub offers positive mental health strategies, applicable to people of all ages. You can play a big role in supporting the development of positive wellbeing habits at home by checking out the site!
Following David's update, please note that I am now serving as the acting Student Wellbeing Leader in Melanie's absence while she is on maternity leave.
KInd Regards

On Wednesday 21st May, our Grade 2, Grade 3, and Grade 4 students took part in the 25th Anniversary of National Simultaneous Storytime — a much-loved annual event that promotes the joy of reading and the importance of literacy across Australia.
At 12:00pm, students gathered in their classrooms to listen to this year’s picture storybook, The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel and illustrated by Danny Snell. They joined thousands of children from schools across the country who read the same book at the same time!
After reading the story, each year level completed a literacy activity to demonstrate their comprehension of the book. The Grade 2 students creatively responded to the text by creating a Polaroid-style snapshot, drawing a picture of themselves surrounded by the people, places, and things that are important to them.

Literacy Leader
Ciao a tutti!
We hope you all enjoyed reading the students' Languages mid term reviews and goal setting via seesaw last week. We have now commenced a new unit with the language focus for each class as follows.
Buon weekend!
From the TCL team
Maria Vainieri e Adriana Bonacci
Our Year 4 and 5 students have truly embraced their new Buddy Program with the children from HE Kane Uniting Kindergarten! During their fortnightly visits, our older students have lovingly nurtured these new friendships by reading stories, playing games and puzzles, building with blocks, and engaging in various other activities, both indoors and outside on the playground. These interactions have been incredibly rewarding, and they're now even working together to plant vegetables in the kindergarten's garden. We're excited for the next step in this partnership, as the kindergarten children will soon visit our school to participate in our Science Fair, allowing their STM buddies to proudly showcase their learning from this term.
Thomas' Tales will return in Week 2 of Term 2, Friday 2nd May 2025 and run until Week 10 (Friday 27th June)
Thomas' Tales Italian Edition Special Event: Week 8 (Friday 13th June) Signora Bonacci will be joining Miss Lou for Italian Story Time.
