We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we gather today -
The Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation and pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
Hear my prayer as I begin this Lenten journey with you.
Let me be honest with myself as I look into my heart and soul, noticing the times I turn away from you. Guide me as I humbly seek to repent and return to your love.
May humility guide my efforts to be reconciled with you and live forever in your abundant grace.
Amen

I have really appreciated everyone stopping to say hello as you enter and exit the school each day.

Staffing changes
Please be advised that Rebecca Russo will be leaving St Thomas More at the end of Term 1. Rebecca has been at the school since 2014, contributing significantly to both classroom teaching and our Wellbeing team. She has accepted the position of Wellbeing Leader at St Christopher's in Airport West, and we extend our best wishes to her in this new role.
We are pleased to announce that Anthony Montesano will join us as the new Year 1 teacher, replacing Rebecca. Anthony brings extensive experience and has been a valued Casual Relief Teacher at STM for many years.
Tarryn Cehner will also not be returning to St. Thomas More as she has accepted a position much closer to her family. Tarryn has been a valued member of our school community since 2015 and we wish her all the best at her new school. Please be assured that the position has been advertised, and we are working diligently to fill it. We will update you as soon as a new teacher is appointed.
Location of Before and After School care - OSH CLUB
Please note that with the recent renovations having been completed the School Hall is now available to be used for both Before and After School Care. Please be advised that the change of location will begin from Tuesday 11th March.
Parent Teacher Interviews information
An email was sent last Friday with information regarding booking your children for Parent Teacher Interviews on Monday 31st March from 12.15pm. Your Parent Teacher Interview is of a 10 minute duration and is an opportunity to discuss your child's learning progress with their classroom teacher, this includes learning strengths and areas of need. For the smooth running of this event, it is important to keep to this schedule. If you have more than one child at school, we advise parents not to book back to back appointments and to leave at least a 10 minute interval between appointments. This way teachers can run their appointments on time, and parents can have a full 10 minute interview. Please visit www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use the following event code to book an interview with your child's teacher, Event code: xuxs9. Please also note that school will conclude at 12pm on Monday 31st March for the Parent Teacher Interviews.

Acting Principal
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests for Years 3, 5, 7 & 9 will be held in March. The schedule is as follows:
12th March - Writing
13th March - Reading and Language Conventions
14th March - Mathematics
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year. It is the only national assessment all Australian students have the opportunity to undertake. As students progress through their school years, it is important to check how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and numeracy.
NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national proficiency standards.
NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. It does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, but it can provide teachers with more information about students’ educational progress.
NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working, and whether young Australians are achieving important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.
To find out more about the NAPLAN assessment, please visit the following link for parents and carers: https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/naplan/parentpamphlet/2025/NAPLAN2025Informationforparentsandcarersbrochure.pdf
The following slides/links were presented at the parent information sessions and contain relevant information pertaining to each year level, including Term 1 Curriculum Overviews.

Author's Corner
Our Year 6 students have been captivated by the beautiful and thought-provoking picture book, "Stone Lion." They've delved deep into the story's themes of courage and change, and recently put their creative writing skills to the test by writing letters to the Stone Lion from the perspective of one of the main characters. We've been thoroughly impressed by their empathy and imaginative interpretations of this wonderful story.
Dear Stone lion,
I cannot express the level of gratefulness I am feeling towards you. I don’t even know if I’d still be alive right now if you didn’t save me and my baby brother. Although I miss those nights I used to huddle next to you, I am glad I am living life as a normal girl now. I can’t believe you used your small amount of time to be alive to save me and not sprint into the wilderness instead. I appreciate you so much for being selfless and empathetic to me and my brother. We both have a home now with two amazing parents and I feel so happy. I wish I could do something for you in return, like turn you back alive forever, but sadly, I can’t. I’m sorry that I haven’t been visiting you, it’s just that I live so far away and my parents have been quite busy lately. You protected me and my baby brother and I am so, so lucky that I found you, or else by now I would be cold and hard like you. Now the weather is nice and hot, which is really nice too. I just really hope you are still doing okay, you are, right? I promise I will visit you soon, but my parents don’t believe that a stone lion saved me, nobody does. I will have to convince them to take me to you but I promise I will never give up.
From you old friend, Sara
by Maya (Year 6)
Dearest Stone Lion,
If it was not for you I would not be here right now. It was so hard for my lovely sister, just her and I. Even though I was a small child back then, I still remember when she huddled close to you, whispering her prayers for a better life, and how she believed you were real. She was right. I am a lot older now but I still remember that night, and how you licked the delicate snowflake off my nose. My friends don't believe me, but I know it happened. Ben is our father now and he is the most lovely father to roam around the earth. He loves to read us books and cuddle up to us. My favourite book that he has read to us is by far 'The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe' because it reminds me of you and lion's are my favourite animal too! Sara is very confident now. She doesn't talk about you as often as she used to but I know she still loves you dearly. More stone lions have been placed around the city in memory of you. All the young children love you but don't believe the tales I have told them about you.
Warm regards,
Sara's brother.

Year 1- Magic Beans Partitioning
In Mathematics our Year 1 students have been learning about partitioning numbers. Using "Magic Beans" (with gold and white sides), they explored how one and two-digit numbers can be broken down into different parts. Students shook their beans, recorded the number of gold and white beans, and created number sentences to represent the relationship between the whole and its parts. This hands-on activity helps develop students' number sense and lays a foundation for future mental computation. We are very proud of their progress!

Donations
Thank you so much to the families that have donated the most beautiful books to our library. If anyone has picture books in wonderful used condition they could donate, we would love them for our new Thomas' Tales initiative.
Scholastic Book Club and Book Fair
Issue 2 of the Scholastic Book Club catalogue has been sent home. Orders for this issue close on the 24th of March, so get your orders in now to avoid disappointment. All orders help the school buy new books for the library.
We would really like to run a Book Fair next term. Book Fairs provide a lovely boost in funds for the library and are a really exciting event for the children. To run the Book Fair we would like to know if any parents could help out in the morning or afternoon. The fair will be open in the mornings from 8.30 to 8.50 and in the afternoon from 3.20 till 3.40. We have a tentative date of the 13th of March - 20th of March. Contact Lou leveston@stmhadfield.catholic.edu.au if you are interested in helping out.
