June 6th:
Whole Class: How to comment on Scratch Projects
Be specific! Nothing like: Love it! It's great. Good work, etc. Compliment something specific in the project.
It's okay to give suggestions but they must be specific and kind.
Do NOT refer to the person who created this with their last name and do not use your last name.
Finish your original project in Scratch - Do NOT start anything new!
Make sure to name your project 5th-YourFirstName-Something to Say What the Project Is - for example, 5th-Susie-Virtual Pet
When you have finished:
SHARE your project
Add any instructions, if a user would need them for your project. These must use proper grammar and spelling. Full sentences are required.
Add thank yous/credits if you used a tutorial or sprites or code from someone else. If you are using Scratch cards, any of the coding books, or the Tips page, you need to have credits! These must use proper grammar and spelling. Full sentences are required.
Sign in to Google Classroom and use Assignment 012 as a guide and add a post to your Google Site for your completed project. Done? Please rate some games for a game contest.Open the Rate the Games form and play each of the games below and fill out the form for it:
How to play: First you find a way out of the witches trap which might take a few tries. Next stay as long as you can but if you stay in one spot you make no points. When you touch a witch the game will reset.
Create a project to tell a Knock Knock joke. Need a joke? Check out these or these.
Make sure to name this 5th-YourFirstName-Knock Knock (or something similar. It MUST start with 5th-YourFirstName-.)
Use the Broadcast Control block to control timing. Use proper capitalization and punctuation!
See this or this video tutorial from a former St. Martin's 8th grader for more information.
A Tip: If you use the Broadcast and Wait block (instead of just the broadcast block) only the sprite that starts the joke needs to do broadcasts and the other sprite just uses the When I Receive blocks.
Make sure you check your spelling and grammar on your say blocks. Scratch does not indicate if things are incorrect. Capitalize properly and include punctuation.
When you are done, complete at least one of the challenges:
Challenge 1: Have the sprites laugh at the end of the joke both with say blocks (under Looks) and sound.
Challenge 2: Have the 2nd sprite tell a joke back to the 1st sprite again with Broadcast (or Broadcast and Wait) blocks.
When you have finished your joke project, make sure to SHARE it and add it to the Class of 2021 Studio
Decide on a project you want to create - your project must be approved before you create it if it is not from a Scratch book, Scratch Cards, or the Tips page. Your project must be appropriate for school: No copyrighted images or sounds, No violent or otherwise inappropriate content.
Look through the Scratch books / Scratch Cards in the lab & pick a project. There are a limited number of these so not everyone can do this.
Check out the Tips page (these are like the Scratch Cards) and pick something to create. Start with the original instructions and then add something to make this your own.
Come up with your own idea. Get approval for the project you want to create.
All spelling & grammar must be correct.
Create your project making sure to name it 5th-YourFirstName-Something to Say What the Project Is - for example, 5th-Susie-Virtual Pet
When you have finished, make sure to:
SHARE your project

Sign in to Google Classroom and complete and turn in the following assignments. If you have previously turned in an assignment, make sure to open and read any feedback left on the assignment and fix any problems.
Add your Last Name & Page Number to the header. There is a video for this.
Continue typing your essay.
When done typing:
Read your entire essay and make sure it makes sense. It is actually best to read it out loud (quietly) so you hear the errors. If you just read it silently to yourself, it is very easy to read what you meant to say and not what you actually did say. Here are some common problems that I have seen in the past so make sure to check for these.
Do not have sentence fragments. Something like "When my mom taught me to read." is not a sentence. It needs to be part of another thought like "When my mom taught me to read, it opened up a whole new world to me."
Do not join sentences with commas. If something is a complete thought, it needs to be a new sentence or it needs to be joined with a joining word like and. For example, "I was born on January 1, 1820, my sister was born on February 3, 1821." is not correct. This should be two sentences: "I was born on January 1, 1820. My sister was born on February 3, 1821."
If you are talking about a date the preposition is ON not IN - on January 1, 1820. If you are talking about a month or year, then the preposition is IN - in January 1820 or in 1820.
Do not capitalize words mid-sentence that are not proper nouns.
Always capitalize "I" when you are using the pronoun "I". For example, My sister and I went to the store. Do not capitalize "i" in other words that are not proper nouns.
Check your use of the pronoun "me". Me is never the subject of a sentence. "Me and my sister, Amy, went to the store." is not correct. Check this by taking out the part after the and. You wouldn't say "Me went to the store." so "Me and" is not correct. It should be "My sister, Amy, and I went to the store."
If you are writing your essay in the first person, make sure it is all written in the first person. You should not have some sentences that start "I did" and others that start "He did" or "She did".
Make sure that you have divided your essay into appropriate paragraphs - there is a video on how to do this in the assignment.
Reset your headings & title to be more display friendly - there is a video on how to do this in the assignment.
Add images of your inventor and their invention(s) to your report - there is a video on how to do this in the assignment. The search function has changed slightly since the video was made and images will now be shown to the right rather than on a new page. You will click the image(s) you want and select Insert to add them to your report.
If you want to add captions to images which are displayed next to one another, watch the Captions on Side by Side Images video in the assignment.
If your report is complete, Turn In the assignment.
If you have not, create a Rock, Paper, Scissors game on your micro:bit - this MUST be installed at the end of class and your Rock, Paper, & Scissors need to look like the agreed upon options
Finish and turn in Assignment 003 - Google Site Setup

September 25th:
Whole Class: Let's enter, create a column chart and look at our OREO Results:
What DATA did we collect?
Who thought they could stack the most?
Who thought they would stack the least?
How many people did better on their first try than on their second try? How many did better on their second try? How many did the same?
How many people stacked more than they thought they would? How many stacked less than they thought they would? Did anyone stack the exact amount they predicted they would?
Each student will have 2 attempts to create a cookie stack.
Students will place one cookie on the paper plate/table cloth and add one cookie at a time to the stack.
Students may NOT adjust the cookie after they have placed the cookie on the stack and moved their hand away.
Cookies need to be freestanding and NOT leaning against any kind of support or use any kind of adhesion so they stick together.
Cookie needs to be a regular cookie and not separated in ANY way.
Another student should be tallying as the student stacks.
A tumble has occurred once 1 or more cookies have tumbled off the stack. The complete stack DOES not need to completely tumble for it to be called a tumble.
Find your sheet and enter your name (First Name ONLY!) in cell A1
Click on the Test Name & select the link
Do NOT change the settings on the test
When the test is done, you will see a message that says "Your typing speed was xx words per minute with xx errors. Your calculated speed is: xx words per minute." Take note of the CALCULATED speed. That is what you will record on the spreadsheet.
Take the test twice. Do NOT answer the "Do you want to place your calculated wpm speed on the scoreboard? Instead, use the Reload icon on your browser to reload the test after you have noted your calculated speed.
Record the best of your two calculated speeds from the test on your Keyboarding Speed Tests spreadsheet in the Start of the Year column.
