Leaders today face increasing challenges when trying to create organizational cultures that support employee engagement, creativity, and retention, particularly in dispersed, hybrid, and remote work environments. Research indicates that employees who experience joy at work offer significant benefits to their organizations and demonstrate improved performance in their work. Much of the existing research on joy at work focuses on nursing and healthcare settings, offering limited research to date on how joy can be cultivated in corporate workplaces. Additionally, there is a gap in the research for how joy at work is impacted by remote and hybrid work environments and how leaders may need to adapt to facilitate and encourage joy differently in these settings. The purpose of this action research project was to investigate how dispersed employees experience joy at work by conducting an online “joy assessment” survey and facilitated discussion in a mid-size consulting firm. This presentation will focus on the results of the assessment and discuss how managers in corporate settings can cultivate more joy for employees in dispersed environments.
