In today’s dynamic business environments, organizational culture is not solely determined by the strategic vision and directives of leadership but is also heavily influenced by collective behaviors and attitudes of followers within teams and across corporations. If leadership is a dance between strategic leaders and their followers, then team and organizational culture is the music that guides the dance.
This action research project was designed to look at how followers within organizations felt about themselves, their roles, and their ability to impact cultural change. It also set out to see how specific actions might impact the culture of their teams and organizations. The actions prescribed for the action part of the action research were driven by the research in psychological safety (Edmondson, 1999) and in courageous followership (Chaleff, 2012).
