The Gentleness of God

We begin this half term with a worship theme of gentleness, as we examine once again the Beatitudes given to us by Jesus during his sermon on the mount. In a change to our normal worship routines, we look backwards this week to this current weekend's celebration of All Saints.

We discovered during Gospel worship this week the gentleness needed to take care of Ada - Miss Portelli's tortoise and, in the very same way, we explored how God calls us to treat each other with great care and gentleness because we are also his creation.

B - All Saints

Nursery say, "Thank you..."

In the nursery we have been looking at how Bartimaeus in the Bible was thankful to God for healing him and that he could now see. We were able to link this to our harvest celebration, thinking about what we are all thankful to God for. In the nursery we had a Thankful Pumpkin, and at circle time all the children had the opportunity to tell us what they were thankful for.

The pumpkin is now planted in our nursery garden, so the children can watch how the pumpkin changes over time.

Firework Signs

Our Infant Sign Language Club have been teaching us these fantastic firework signs this week - what a joy to celebrate this special event in a new way!

November’s ‘Right of the Month’ is:

Article 38- You have a right to protection in times of war. If you are under 15, you should never have to be in an army or take part in a battle.

During this month we celebrate Remembrance day on the 11th November.

This day commemorates the signing of the armistice between the Allies and Germany at 11 am on 11 November 1918 – the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

You may like to think about countries where children are affected by war such as Yemen, Syria and Iraq. How do you think war affects children? What could we do to help?

Anti-Bullying Week 2021: One Kind WordAnti-Bullying Week is taking place from 15 to 19 November 2021 and it has the theme One Kind Word. The week will begin with Odd Socks Day.

The ‘Wellness Warrior Challenge’ is:

This month we also celebrate Anti-Bullying week. This year has the theme of one kind word. You may like to write one kind word about some of your friends and classmates.

Gentle Choices

In Witness Worship this week, Mrs Gonella introduced the children to Desmond Doss, a man who found himself in the dilemma of needing to fight for his country in war but also wanting to remain true to his belief that it was wrong to kill. Desmond was a corporal in the US Army but served as a medic and dedicated his work to saving his fellow men and making gentle choices, like refusing to carry a rifle.

Desmond went on to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honour for his remarkable courage and conviction. His gentle choices made a significant difference to the lives of many others.

A hoot in Year 3!

English lessons in Year 3 are focusing on the well-known story ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’, so today the children enjoyed a fascinating talk from Angela and Mark about different owls. She showed us three different owls: an African Spotted Eagle Owl, a Great Grey Owl and a Bengal Eagle Owl and gave us many facts about their diet, habitat, appearance and behaviour. The children asked interesting questions and listened to the answers. One owl was a little nervous and kept trying to spread his wings! Here are some of the facts we learned: the smallest owl is the size of your thumb, if an owl has yellow eyes it is a day bird, female owls are bigger than male owls and owls can live up to 40 years old. Angela commented on how thoughtful the children’s questions were and their excellent behaviour. Well done Year 3!

Netball

On Wednesday afternoon, we played Queen Eleanor's School in Year 5 and Year 6 netball matches. Despite the cold and drizzle, all teams played remarkably well, demonstrating commendable sportsmanship and such a positive attitude. It was a pleasure to host Queen Eleanor's and the team spirit was felt by all!

Thank you to Mrs Dollner and Miss Longman for leading the training and organising the matches. Well done!

Year 5 Beatitudes

Happy are those who make a small difference,

God will give them what they’ve earned.

Happy are those who donate to the poor,

they will be rich in heaven.

Happy are those who are homeless,

God will give them a home in heaven.

Happy are those who have been through tragedy,

God will comfort their sadness.

Happy are those who are honest,

They will live in the image of Christ

Happy are those who are compassionate,

God will reward you for your love.

Happy are those who grow and develop in God’s name,

God will be with them and carry them when they fall.

Happy are those whose lives have been cut short,

God will make them eternal in Heaven.

Happy are those who give up their things for the poor, sick and lonely,

God will show them the kindness they have shown others a thousand times more.

Year 5 & 6 Football

On Thursday afternoon, we played a Football Tournament at Kings College. The team played incredibly well for their first outing and drew in their first two matches. It was very close!

The team played with energy and commitment and were not disheartened when the final few games did not go their way.

Thank you to Miss Nicholls for organising this event and to the parents for their support on the sidelines.

Gentleness from St Leonard's Class

Wow - what a celebration of gentleness from 4L today! They used an experiment where they each had to care for an egg for the day to learn what it means to be gentle and reflected on how they needed perseverence, patience and courage to be as gentle as they could be. Through drama, the children demonstrated what a powerful witness their class saint - St Leonard - is for the theme of gentleness; he cared for prisoners and pregnant women with sincerity. We also celebrate the Feast of St Leonard tomorrow!

Thank you 4L and Miss Cook for ending the week with such a thoughtful reflection on gentleness.
