Christ, Our Servant

In worship this week we are exploring the theme of service. In this weekend's Gospel (29th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B), James and John (two of Jesus' disciples) ask a special favour: they want to join him on his left and right hand side in the Kingdom of Heaven. They want the seats of glory.

When the other disciples hear about this, they are outraged! Jesus calms their tempers and explains that the route to the Kingdom of Heaven is through service - the greatest must make themselves the servant of all.

So we are asking the children this week, led by their House Captains, how they will serve our community and help to build God's kingdom here at St Joseph's.

A day in the life of...

What a fantastic Florence Nightingale Day Year 2 have had! Dressing up as nurses and doctors really helped us to go back in time to when Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole travelled to Scutari Hospital to help soldiers in the Crimean War. We took part in all kinds of activities throughout the day, including role playing the jobs that Florence and her nurses had to carry out: healing soldiers, making and trying Ginger Beer (one of Mary Seacole's herbal remedies), making medals similar to the ones that Florence was awarded when she returned from Turkey and training to be soldiers in our PE lessons!

Buildings through time

Wow, Year 5! We have all been blown away by your incredible efforts with making your Anglo-Saxon homes and villages. The creativity is absolutely amazing. We have had children use lollipop sticks, pieces of wood, Lego, playdough and create online villages on Minecraft! A very well done to all those who clearly spent many hours creating these masterpieces. A big thank you to parents for your help as well.

At the service of our community

Miss Rycroft took the lead in this week's Witness Worship, introducing us to two very special people: Erik & Rebecca. They have committed many hours of service to their local community, in Woking, to help imagine and build a community centre called The Lighthouse.

It is a vibrant hub in the centre of Woking that hosts a range of creative projects to support, encourage and empower those who find themselves on the margins. What better way to see Christ's Gospel lived out in our world this week?

Signs and Symbols

Year 2 were blessed last week to enjoy a masterclass in the signs and symbols of baptism, led by Monsignor Tony. The children had the opportunity to explore the artefacts at St Mary's Church, gaining an insight into the deeper symbolism of the baptismal rite: "It's great that you get anointed with oil," remarked one onlooker, "it shows you are special - like a king or a queen - you mean that much to Jesus."

Cross Country Success!

What a joy it has been to see our cross country teams back out and competing locally. The Junior team were at Holy Trinity School this week. They represented St. Joseph’s fantastically and all beat their placing from last time with a particular well done to Noah for coming 11th and Eliza coming 3rd overall. Well done - you all made us very proud!

Our thanks to St Vincent's Class this week for their inspiring and motivating Class Worship on the theme of service. The children shared with us many examples of servants in our local community, as well as showing us how to apply these lessons to our own lives. I especially enjoyed the revelation that we receive JOY from service by following the rule: Jesus first, Others next, Yourself last. What a powerful message to take away.
