Sara and Sanctuary
Democracy
Sara is in charge of MANY things, however, she opens herself up to feedback, ideas, and help. When you work with Sara, you truly feel like you are a part of a team and that you and your opinions matter
Social Learning
Sara is reached out to by several folks throughout the Division with questions on how to do something or who to reach out to; she is super fast to respond and always takes the time to teach. She shares knowledge and changes as soon as she learns of them. She follows up! Once she teaches you how to do something, she circles back and asks how it went and if you have any further questions.
Social Responsibility
Sara always ensures that our budget is spent wisely; gives advice and guidance on our parts of the budget; and is accountable. She also is the heart of this place - she runs EAC with a caring, open, and thoughtful approach; guides and teaches pretty much everyone; and shows that she genuinely cares about our staff and youth in every single thing that she does. Just know that she rocks harder than Guns and Roses EVER did, smarter than most folks that I know, and has a heart bigger than our Colorado sky.
About Sara -
I am a Colorado native and have worked for the State for 15 years. Most people think I am a social butterfly, but I am actually a really shy person who loves to see people smile so I talk a lot. I am active and enjoy martial arts, yoga, kickboxing and, recently, animal flow. I love my husband, kids and dogs (not necessarily in that order). And I love working with this team!
Sara's nominator had this to say about her
Delivered by Quality Staff - EAC: she runs this ship super tightly ensuring that we can do the best things for our people to show how much we are all appreciated, while helping those on the EAC with her feel like we contribute and matter in so many ways. The Right Services at the Right Time - Scheduling: she keeps the schedule for a ton of folks, Director's Office specific maintenance and vendor needs, all while she helps to teach and guide so so many people in the Division. Using Proven Practices - I do not know of anyone that has not reached out to Sara about something or other in order to learn how to do something and do it the right way. She reaches out constantly to keep everyone aware of any changes to policy or procedure, and follows up to ensure that we understand and don't need help. In Safe Environments: literally manages the office and all maintenance requests/needs.

"Emotions are among the primary determinants of behavior at work...and profoundly influence both the social climate and the productivity of companies and organizations." (Pekrun & Frese)
Emotions are an important component of thought, and it is universally understood that our emotions help us to value what is important in life when rational thought alone may betray us. Emotions are always considered as a part of solving problems, individually and collectively. Change and conflict cannot be avoided in an effort to avoid the emotions associated with such events.
Key elements of Emotional Intelligence include:
identifying, understanding, and having words for feelings
integrating thoughts and feelings
accurately reading and interpreting emotions in others
managing strong emotions and the expression of these emotions
regulating our own behaviors
developing empathy for others
Some tips to keep in mind:
We manage our emotions through recognizing and validating them.
By managing our emotions we don't hurt ourselves or others psychologically, physically, socially, or morally.
We work to be aware of our emotions and the role they play in our interactions with others.

EDI Thought for the month: Emotional Intelligence
By Fitzgerald Clark, DYS Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
The Sanctuary theme of the month is Emotional Intelligence. I have had a lot of people, both at work and in my personal life approach me the last few weeks about how stressed they are with life and how they view some of the broader things that are happening in society.
For many of us here at DYS, the reason we do this work is because we care about others, and we want to make a positive impact in the lives of others. There are times when we feel under heavy stress than can feel almost like a physical pressure upon our spirit. Be emotionally intelligent enough to practice the mindfulness needed to know when and how to take care of yourself.
Practice your safety and self-care plans. Take those deep breaths. Log off at the end of the day and immerse yourself in activities that replenish your spirit and energy. Make plenty of space for the people in your life that you care about and that care about you. Do the hobby or volunteer effort that inspires and invigorates you.
This work is a marathon. It is not a sprint. We work to impact the lives of others in a positive way, day after day. In order to do that, we have to rebuild our stores of energy. We have to remind ourselves of our mission here at DYS and in life. Find your peace. Find your motivation. Energize your spirit for the important work that each of you do every single day here at DYS.
