It is our goal in the Diocese of Charleston to ensure deeper understanding and critical thinking in all subjects for all students. These universal strategies are meant to increase engagement and support growth for all students, especially when struggling to master a concept. This is not an exhaustive list of strategies, but these supports will help teachers make math instruction more accessible for all students. Teachers should adapt strategies to the needs of students and ensure that they are creating opportunities to engage with rigorous content. The items in italic could be considered accommodations, depending on the Curriculum and the local school level team.
Students should have access to tools while learning until they’ve mastered a standard. A good way to differentiate between Best Practice and Accommodation/ Modification–When one or more of the listed strategies are used for an assessment in which other students are expected to perform a task without a tool, it would then become an accommodation.
