Everyone can play sports, even people with disabilities. People with disabilities can play many regular sports, but with some modifications for them to play. People with disabilities couldn't play sports and that was unfair because people without disability could play sports and the people with disability were not allowed to.
Some different types of sports for people with disabilities can be, Wheelchair Basketball, Swimming, Goalball, Football 7, Fencing, Cycling, Judo, Archery and Weightlifting. In my opinion one of the disabled sports that I most like is football 7, that is for blind people. According to Accessibility Expo “Sport, like any recreational activity, has important Benefits for our daily lives. This can be very important for people with disabilities”. There are a number of hyper-successful sports people with disabilities. According to Michael Halpin“ People with disabilities are not incapable of competing with able bodied people, this can be seen with the case of Jim Abbott above.” Modifications in adapted sports are minimal and therefore allow people with disabilities to practice them. As explained by Sunrise Medical “One of the fundamental aspects in these sports is the adaptation of wheelchairs and sports equipment.”
The para athletes are the athletes who compete at the Paralympic Games, they play all the games and can participate in the paralympics. I think that the athletes are the most important people in the competition, and Brazil is the 4th country with the most gold medals. Based on Paralympic Canadian “The rules of Paralympic track and field are almost identical to those of its Olympic counterparts.” The first para athlete to do so was German-American gymnast George Eyser, who had one artificial leg. According to Olympic sports
“Athletes with disabilities did compete at the Olympic Games prior to the advent of the Paralympics.” One thing that I like is that para athletes are grouped together according to their classification in each event. As indicated by ParalympicsGB “Some compete in wheelchairs and some with prostheses, while those who are vision impaired can receive support from a sighted guide.” One thing that really surprised me was that there are events for athletes of short stature.
The Paralympic Games and Their Global Impact, one thing that makes the Paralympic Games so global is because of its history. As stated by the Paralympic Games “They impacted the world through their history, starting as a competition for 16 WWII veterans with spinal cord injuries." At Rome Paralympics, the competitive programme included eight parasport events considered beneficial. According to The History of Parasport “The Paralympic movement truly began as recently as the 1940s, shortly after the end of World War II.” In addition to promoting competition for athletes with disabilities, the Paralympics also serves as an opportunity for host cities to improve accessibility. As mentioned by the International Paralympic Committee “The Paralympic Games focus on values of courage, determination, inspiration, and equality.”
Disability is not a thing to stop you, you can do all you want. The Paralympics is an event that shows the greatest athletes in the world. Everybody should watch the paralympics and be amazed at their skills. According to The History of Parasport “There are now 23 para sports forming part of the Paralympic movement heading into the London 2012 Paralympic Games.”
