With just a camera, some creativity, and patience, normal objects can move, talk, and tell amazing stories, one picture at a time. Stop motion is a very interesting topic to know about like when it was created, how it works, famous movies, and even why it was invented. There are a lot of artists that stop motion changed their lives and even other people's lives as well. It’s good to talk about stop motion because it’s a really cool way of making movies that many people don’t know much about. It shows how creativity, hard work, and imagination can bring objects to life. Learning about it helps us understand how some of our favorite movies and videos are made. According to Rottentomatoes, the majority of stop motion movies are 80% good and have 4 stars out of 5.
Stop motion is an interesting style of animation to know how to do and how it started, being one of the oldest oldests types of animation. I thought that stop motion animation was newer but actually is one of the oldest types of animation. Stop motion was developed in the late 1800 then the first movie of stop motion "The Humpty Dumpty Circus,"that was created in 1898 by J. Stuart Blackton. According to Fathom Entertainment “The creative bounds of stop-motion animation in a vast sea of visual storytelling techniques are endless.” This shows that with creativity the ideas of stop motion animation are endless. The style of this type of animation gave birth to other famous movies like “King Kong” made in 1933 by Willis O'Brien or “The Tale of the Fox” mady in 1937 by Ladislas Starewicz. In the words of Librarypoint “Did you also know that stop motion animation, or the art of animating objects by moving them in small increments between individual photographic frames, is actually the oldest style of animation on film?”. Stop motion animation is made by getting an object and moving them little by little and taking pictures, until the final result looks like the object is moving itself, like ethe object is alive. Based on Adobe “It may be a comparatively low-budget technique against the cream of the Hollywood crop, but the results speak for themselves in terms of originality, form and style - and with decades of successful “stop-go” animations becoming British daytime TV institutions and Oscar winners alike, stop motion animation is a widely celebrated art form too.”
So after learning how stop motion began, it’s exciting to see how it created some of the world’s most beloved movies. There are many famous movies with the style of stop motion that inspired people to do this type of animation. One famous movie that is in ninth place on the 10 best stop motion movies, is “The Nightmare Before Christmas” created in 1993 by Tim Burton that took 3 years to be made. The movie is about a skeleton called Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of HalloweenTown. Jack gets tired of doing Halloween every year. One day, he finds Christmas Town, which is full of lights, snow, and happiness. He loves it and tries to do Christmas himself, but since he’s from HalloweenTown, his version of Christmas is creepy and scary. In the end, Jack learns that each holiday should stay the way it is and he fixes everything. According to Rottentomatoes the movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas” has 95% people saying it was fresh (meaning good) and a rating of four out of five stars. Another famous movie with the same style is “Chicken Run” that was made in the year 2000 by Aardman Animations in collaboration with DreamWorks Animation and Pathé. The movie is about a group of chickens who live on a farm. The chickens are scared because the farmers, Mr. and Mrs. Tweedy, want to turn them into chicken pies. The main chicken, Ginger, is always trying to escape. One day, a rooster named Rocky shows up and says he can teach them how to fly. The chickens work together to build a flying machine to escape. In the end, they manage to fly away and find a safe place to live, free from the farmers. As stated by Rottentomatoes “Chicken Run has all the charm of Nick Park's Wallace & Gromit, and something for everybody. The voice acting is fabulous, the slapstick is brilliant, and the action sequences are spectacular.” Another movie with the stop motion animation style is “Coraline”. The movie is about a girl called Coraline who moves to a new house and discovers a secret door to another world where everything seems better. At first, the “Other Mother” is kind, but she’s actually evil and wants to trap Coraline there forever. Coraline must be brave, save her real parents, and escape before it’s too late. As claimed by Rottentomatoes, the movie “Coraline” has 91% of people saying that it is fresh and has a 3.8 out of 5 stars.
While the movies are amazing, creating stop motion animation also requires smart techniques and tools. Stop motion needs some techniques during the process so the final result doesn't look bad. One technique we can use is by getting some house objects instead of using some complex objects like a rubber ducky, so it would be more easy to animate the object. According to Baianat “These objects are not designed to look as a recognizable human or animal being, unlike model and puppet animation which usually use recognizable characters as their subjects.” Another technique is clay with stop motion. This technique is one of the most famous and better one, because with one simple clay you can transform in many things like cars, animals, monsters and others. According to Adobe “Sculpt characters and props from modelling clay to create strange new worlds”. This technique is called the Frame Stability, using a tripod to keep the camera steady between frames. Lighting: Maintain consistent lighting throughout the shoot, using artificial lighting if necessary to avoid changes in light angles. In the words of Stytchastory “One of the most frustrating aspects of stop motion is dealing with unwanted camera movement. Even the slightest bump to your camera or tripod can result in jarring jumps between frames, breaking the immersion and flow of your animation”.
Besides techniques and tools, there are also many artists who made stop motion more popular and meaningful. There are many famous stop motion artists that have impacted people's lives. One famous stop motion artist Ray Harryhausen was born in 29 of june in 1920 in Los angeles california were he became famous by his movie the “Clash of the Titans”. According to Imdb, one movie that had stop motion animation on it was “George Pal”. Timothy Walter Burton was born in Burbank, California and one of his famous movies is “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. In the words of Imdb “he spent most of his childhood as a recluse, drawing cartoons, and watching old movies”. Another famous stop motion artist is Henry Selick who was born on November 30 of 1952, and his most famous movie is “Coraline”. As stated by Imdb “Henry Selick is a film director, specializing in films with stop-motion animation. He has formal training as an animator”.
