A Message from Administration

Dear Parents,

Students in grades K-8 are finishing up our final session of MAP testing for the year! We use the Measure of Academic Growth (MAP) test to understand and monitor each student’s academic progress. It is an adaptive assessment, not a standardized assessment. This means that the program provides a unique set of questions to each student by adjusting the difficulty of the test up or down, until the program has determined the upper limit of each student’s skills and knowledge in each content area.

Student MAP Growth Scores: Understanding the RIT Score

Upon completion of the MAP Growth test, students receive a number, called a RIT Score, for each area assessed. The higher the RIT score, the more achievement the student has in that area. When reviewing your child’s scores, you can notice how the RIT scores have changed over time, how they compare to the scores of other Archdiocesan students, and how they compare with national testing norms. While it can be informative to compare your child to peers, the true usefulness of RIT scores comes in allowing students, parents and teachers to see what content has been mastered and what the student is ready to learn next. In no way do RIT scores indicate intelligence or measure your child’s future potential.

Growth Over Time

We strive to see one year’s worth of academic growth for each student every school year. In this way, the growth of each student is the focal point of our exceptional educators at St. Albert. Just like taking your child to a well-check appointment where they compare height and weight to national averages, the RIT score enables us to keep an official growth chart for your child’s academic performance.

How will St. Albert use these scores?

MAP Growth results allow students, parents, and teachers to see what content has been mastered, what the student is ready to learn next, and the rate of learning over time. While we hope for accurate RIT scores, we recognize that other factors may impact a student’s MAP performance- including fatigue, health, test anxiety, motivation or distractibility. We know that one low test score is not indicative of an academic concern or regression. Just like adults, students will have good days and bad. For this reason, MAP results are just one tool we use to understand and monitor our student’s growth. Using formative and summative assessments, work samples, and classroom observations- our educators continuously evaluate and work to improve the educational experiences at St. Albert to better fit the needs and abilities of our students.

Spring MAP scores will be sent home in Tuesday folders on May 7, 2024- be on the lookout!

We are proud of each one of our students and the growth that they have shown this year!

Please note that grades 4, 5, and 6 use the Math Standards-Based workbook during the school year. All other classes use the regular math workbook. Standards-based workbooks tend to be text-heavy and may require more explanation. If you want your child to work independently, you might want to consider the original version over the standards-based. Click the link above to order.

May Crowning

Throughout history, Catholics have long honored the Blessed Virgin Mary during the month of May to symbolize Her significance in the Church and in our lives.  In honor of the Blessed Virgin, Saint Albert the Great Catholic School  will honor and celebrate Mary with a "May Crowning" on Thursday, May 2nd at 9:30 AM.  Each class will participate in the procession, the second graders will recite a special poem, and we will crown a statue of the Blessed Virgin  with a garland or crown of flowers honoring Her as “the Queen of May."

Please join us for this beautiful tradition. We honor our Blessed Mother, and our earthly mothers, on this special day!
