A Message from Administration

Dear Parents,

We hope that you all had an enjoyable spring break and were able to spend some quality time with your children. Loren Corbett and I have been working with the students individually, in small groups and with classroom lessons that focus on social skills and friendship. Friends make life more interesting, can give children a sense of belonging, and can also have health benefits. Children develop social skills and self-esteem through the process of making and navigating friendships. Friendships are important at all ages, and your guidance and monitoring of activities are needed for your child to develop and maintain successful friendships. Parents who have open communication and active involvement in the early years set the tone for ongoing deeper conversations about friends during the school-aged and adolescent years.

Many parents think “children need to work it out themselves.” Sometimes they do, but they also need support and role modeling when it comes to healthy friendships. There are some helpful things that you can do as a parent to encourage healthy friendships without getting overly involved. We can help our kids learn to recognize behaviors of a good friend, how to be a good friend and how to facilitate complicated relationships or conflict with friends. These are skills we continue to learn throughout life. But the foundation starts in childhood.

Talk to your child about how good friends treat you. A younger child may identify behaviors such as sharing, saying kind words, and taking turns. An older child may identify qualities such as being trustworthy, empathetic and thoughtful. It is also important to identify behaviors that are not okay. Name-calling, insulting, eye rolling, exclusion, and gossiping are not acceptable behaviors at any age. Reminding kids that a true friend respects their opinions, interests and choices, no matter how different they are is encouraged.

If your child is experiencing conflict with peers or is upset about feeling left out, you can help your child work it out by talking with them about what happened, how they feel about it and how they can handle situations like that in the future. Sometimes just listening or giving your child a hug can help. Encouraging your child by sharing a friendship trouble that you had as a child or reading a story about friendships can help. Parents should view these situations as opportunities to teach their child valuable life lessons.

I’d like to share a prayer I came across recently…

8 Things to Pray for Your Kids’ Friendships

Pray for true friendship (John 15:13)

Pray for wise friendships (Psalm 1:1-2)

Pray for friends that grow in faith (Proverbs 27:17)

Pray for faithful friendships (Proverbs 3:3)

Pray for friends that build up one another (Ephesians 4:32)

Pray for friendships that stand firm in times of pressure (I Corinthians 16:13)

Pray for difficult friendships (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)

Pray for forever friendships (Proverbs 17:17)

School News

At approximately 3:30 PM today The school technology director will send an email to parents/guardians of students who are at risk of failing a class. These emails will only be sent if a student has earned a grade of D or lower in a class. The messages are distributed via our School Information System, Sycamore, at the homeroom level. Consequently, the subject line will refer to the homeroom of the student, i.e. "Homeroom 4A - Notice of Poor Academic Performance". Unfortunately, Sycamore does not currently offer a way to include the name of the student, the class in which the student is struggling, or the current numerical / letter grade earned by the student in these email messages. The message is merely intended to notify the parents/guardians that their student is not performing well in one or more classes and encourage them to check Sycamore for more specific information about the student's grades.  Questions about specific classes or grades should be directed to the teacher of that class.

Here is a link to a site that explains how to check grades on Sycamore.

St. Albert Men's Fellowship

Looking for brotherhood and a strong sense of community? The St. Albert Men's Fellowship is just for you! The idea for the fellowship came about in 2022, when several parishioners began to get together informally to share ideas, opportunities and to sharpen one another in different ways. Over the years, the group has grown, and we're excited to formalize our gatherings at St. Albert, inviting all our parish brothers to come meet other like-minded men interested in forming strong friendships, deepening their faith, and participating in service. "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." Proverbs 17:17.

Join the Fellowship on Thursday, April 18th, 7:30pm in the Cafeteria for pizza and drinks! The group will be brainstorming ideas for future social gatherings and ways to get involved in parish life.

If interested in attending, please click this link  to fill out the form and tell us more about yourself. If you have any questions, please contact Nick Norcia at NLNorcia@gmail.com
