Our district uses the Schoology learning management system. One feature available through our subscription is Course Updates. Course Updates can be used to create announcements in a course. Posting updates in the course quickly communicates brief messages for your learners. When updates are posted, they appear in the Updates section and on each individual homepage of all members in the course.
I do not have a rostered course in Schoology, but have created my own PD course for staff in the district. I have begun using the Updates feature to pass along professional development tips, resources and opportunities for our staff. I like this avenue over a district group email because the updates only go to those people directly participating in my course and not others such as kitchen staff, board members, custodians, etc. Using this feature myself also helps me to better understand it so that I am able to successfully coach staff. Below is a screenshot of one of my recent course updates.
Because I support teachers with all things digital in our building, it is also important that I personally use the tools that I am teaching. Schoology is the LMS that we utilize in our district. I use it on a personal level in many different ways:
This school year we introduced week long "maker clubs" for grades 3-5. This club took place just prior to the start of the school day. We introduced many maker challenges and invited students to try out new activities and tools during this time. Mr. O'Leary, our art teacher, was invited in as a resident expert during one of these sessions to introduce learners to 3D pens and stop motion video creation. Our own teachers and staff members can be powerful resources and role models for our learners.
