April 14th of 2020, our district provided an in-service for staff working from home due to the Corona Virus. We knew that we needed to give our colleagues PD that was both valuable and at their own level of development. I designed and created a day's worth of learning activities. There were six activities based upon frequently asked questions or recent distance learning challenges. Learners were able to choose two options and work through each of these options at their own pace. Below is a screenshot displaying a few of those choices:
I plan a fair amount of PD for our district staff. It is important to me that I present topics and skills that are important or valuable for them. I also believe that giving our staff choices helps to build autonomy. The following is a google form sent out to staff prior to our County-Wide In-service to illicit their ideas and needs
The creation of this survey just prior to the 2017/2018 school year allowed me to better understand the needs and desires our staff had for staff development. Further, it allowed me to analyze staff prior knowledge and their understandings about learner preferences and individual learning styles. I intend to create and use a similar tool again at the end of the 2017/2018 school year to assess staff needs for the upcoming school year. This will help me to add to self-directed PD modules housed within our LMS and will additionally assist in the planning of applicable professional learning activities to be used at our in- service and training days next year.
