Dear Families in Luna's classes,
You will find the weekly homework assignments here. The assignments correlate to what we work on in our direct sessions for the week. Last years supports are at the bottom of this page, in addition to other references.
Week of September 14:
Language Strategy: Choices
Offer your child choices of two items. Hold up actual items and name them as you hold them. Encourage your child to use communication instead of grabbing or crying. Your child can point, use words, attempt the word, make sounds, or use a gesture/sign. Choices is a way to provide a model of a words for your child to copy. Choices show children they get reward for attempting to communicate.
Activity: While playing with cars ask which car should go down the ramp. For example, "Do you want the truck or the car?"
When eating offer your child a choice of a snack. Encourage them to attempt the word or point. You may have to help them hand over hand to point.
Expanding: Laura Mize does a great job of showing how to use choices teach language. You can watch her video here.
After you complete the activity please go to this Google Form and let me know how it went.
Week of September 8:
Language Strategy: Naming
Do lots of naming of the target words during play so that your child hears the names often. While children are learning language, it is better to give them the names of the words, rather than asking ‘what’s that?’, as they may not have the language needed to respond. Research shows children with language delays need to hear words more often than typically developing kids before they start to understand and use them.
Activity: Talk about food as you get ready for breakfast or lunch. For example: "banana" "eat banana" "yellow banana" "peel banana" If your child repeats you, great! If not, that's okay too! A big part of learning to speak is making connections with people. As long as you are both engaged with each other while talking you are working on the foundation skills for communication.
Expanding: LingoRoo introduces expanding Naming and other Language Stimulation techniques in a video here. She explains self-talk, parallel talk and expanding utterances.
After you complete the activity please go to this Google Form and let me know how it went.
Check out the BOOM Cards page for specially selected interactive games to play for speech and language.
