(1903-1950)
Today’s goal: To create and perform a “Talk Show” skit where a host interviews characters, the author, and readers about the events of the final chapters of 1984.
STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS:
Assemble into groups of five. You’re going to be writing a script for a talk show.
Assign a character role to each person. You may play multiple characters if you wish, though you are only required to play one. (Mr. Charrington will read the questions you’ve written for the host.) Available roles = Julia, Winston, O'Brien, Big Brother, Emmanuell Goldstein, Syme, Parsons, Mrs. Parsons, Tillotson, Ampleforth, The Woman with Sandy Hair, The Man with the Quacking Voice, katharine, Martin, Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford, The Skull-Face Man, Bumstead, The Old Prole Man, Winston's Mother, Comrade Withers, Comrade Ogilvy.
For each character, write one question for the host to ask him or her that center around some aspect of the ending of 1984. Come up with a substantial, interesting, authentic response for the question, which will be read by the character during the staging of our “talk show.” Through your characters’ answers, you should be doing the following (A) Slyly inserting a commentary on the novel’s resolution, (B) Reflecting a larger theme of the novel, or (C) Reinforcing what you feel to be Huxley’s views as put forth through the story.
WRITE, REHEARSE, PERFORM, DISCUSS!
