Course Content

There are three units we cover on the Sports Studies course:

1. Contemporary issues in sport unit – What factors could impact on participation of specific groups of people. How are values used and developed in sport and what is needed to host a major global event like the Olympics?  How is technology changing sport (worth 40% of overall grade)


2.Performance and leadership in sports activities unit

 Practical performance, skills, tactical knowledge and understanding in two chosen sports. Designing training to develop your identified technical weaknesses.

Practical performance as a leader. Planning, risk assessment and reviewing your performance as a leader. (worth 40% of overall grade).


3.Increasing awareness of Outdoor and Adventurous Activities unit – Analyse how different outdoor and adventurous activities (OAA) operate in the UK. Plan, take part in and review an OAA activity.  This is completed at a local OAA provider such as Whitlingham County Park. (worth 20% of overall grade).



Skills Developed

You will develop different retrieval skills to help you remember the different areas of theory.

You will develop your evaluation and analysis skills that can be used in many different areas and subjects.

You will develop your application skills to transfer theoretical content to sporting contexts.

You will develop your leadership skills and this will increase your self-confidence.

You will develop advanced skills in the practical sports you choose to be assessed in, including tactics and team strategy.

You will work within a team set-up as well as developing your resilience as an individual in both the practical and theoretical setting.

You will develop analytical skills to help break down the media coverage of sport.


How am I assessed? 

Contemporary issues in sport unit – assessed in one written exam in May of your Y11.  


Performance and leadership in sports activities unit- Practical assessment in two sports, a written training programme to improve technical skills in your favourite activity. Practical assessment as a leader, then a planning written assignment and an evaluation of your own leadership. 


Sport and the media unit – Three written assignments, with two attempts allowed on each assignment.



Progression Routes

Academic A-Level PE

Sports related degrees (Sports development, sports science, PE teaching, physiotherapy etc)


Applied

L3 Cambridge Technical in Physical activity and Sport (single award)

L3 Cambridge Technical Diploma in sport (double award)

Public services or health and social L3 qualifications


Employment (examples)

PE teaching, physiotherapy, coaching, sports development, nutritionist, strength and conditioning coach, psychologist, performance analyst, sports scientist, plus jobs in sport that have not yet even been developed.
