This method of selecting printers is recommended for Faculty and Staff that need or would like to use their personal laptops to connect to and print from campus printers.
Windows
Plug in your ethernet cable or connect to the “su-pirate” network.
Open the Start Menu and either search for “Run”. Click “Run” and type “\\mill” into the field and click OK.
The prompt for username and password should appear. In the username field, type “southwestern\your username” and then your password. Be sure to check the box that says “Remember my credentials” and hit Enter.
A window should pop up with each of the printers available. Double-click on whichever printer you want to install and Windows will install the printer for you to then choose from.
Plug in your ethernet cable (using a thunderbolt adapter if necessary) or connect to the “su-pirate” network.
Click on the following links to download the Xerox and HP Drivers for macOS if you have not installed them already. Run each installer to install all available drivers.
Open System Preferences and click the “Printers & Scanners” icon. Click the “+” button to add a printer.
When the “Add Printer” window appears, right click on the toolbar and click on “Customize Toolbar”.
Click and drag the “Advanced” button to the toolbar and click “Done”.
Click on the Advanced button and wait for options to become available
Change Device Type to “Windows Printer via spoolss”
For URL, use “smb://mill.southwestern.edu/” and the queue name for the printer. Copy the queue name to the Name field.
Click the dropdown box that says “Choose a Driver...” and click “Select Software”. Choose the correct driver for the printer. If the correct model is not available, make sure the HP and Xerox drivers are installed correctly.
Click Add.
Configure the printer for each option (extra paper trays, duplex printing) and click OK. The printer should now be ready to print.
The printer is now ready to print!
