Yonglian Temple's entrance faces south, because Chinese fengshui say that sitting in the northern position facing south is more auspicious. The pattern of the temple is rectangular. The overall architectural space follows the rules of traditional Taiwanese Buddist temples. It is based on the principle of symmetrical distribution from the central axis of the body. For example,the decorations on the door,the pond,the front hall,the main hall, the back hall, Hall of the Heavenly King, Hall of Three Treasures, the clock tower, and the golden pavilion. What is most attractive about Yonglian Temple is each hall uses wells in various shapes. What's more, the rooftops mainly use the hip-and-gable style, which incites feelings of the sublime.
Yonglian Temple is decorated with clay sculptures, colorful paintings, wood carvings, stone carvings, etc. In the Maode Palace in the front hall, a bronze relief sculpture covers the wall and mainly depicts the exploits of Koxinga. Large pieces of bronze relief as decor is very rare in Taiwanese temples. The middle of one of the bronze walls tells the story of how the Dutch surrendered to Koxinga.On both sides, there are the biography of Koxinga, a seated statue of him, as well as the history of Maode Palace.
