Scholarship Overview
The purpose of the SMFHS String Orchestra Senior Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to students pursuing undergraduate studies in music. This scholarship is funded through the String Orchestra 300 Account.
Please note:
This one-time scholarship is non-renewable.
The recipient may receive and accept other scholarships from other organizations.
Scholarship funds will be made available upon the receipt of both an ACH and W-9 Form. Forms must be submitted to Tammy Sedor, Activities Clerk at SMFHS, by the set deadline.
Eligibility
The applicant MUST:
Be an active Student Musician in the SMFHS String Orchestra Program
Be graduating in the spring semester of the current school year
Make exemplary contributions to the SMF String Orchestra Program
Plan to study music in college at the major or minor level in areas including (but not limited to) Composition, Conducting, Music Education, Music History, Music Theory, Music Therapy, and/or Performance
Be accepted into an accredited college or university
Other criteria for awarding this scholarship will include the applicant’s:
Musicianship
Leadership qualities
Participation in orchestra performances/events
Participation in school/community events
The Orchestra Director will review all applications to ensure that students meet all eligibility criteria. All applications will remain anonymous during the selection process, and all information will be kept strictly confidential.
To apply, the applicant must submit the following items online by Monday,January 20th , 2025:
1. An SMFHS String Orchestra Senior Scholarship Google Form
2. A typed resume or curriculum vitae (CV) outlining the student musician’s musical background, achievements, honors, and extra-curricular activities
3. A typed essay of at least 500 words that showcases a deep passion for music, highlights musical accomplishments (both inside and outside of the ensemble setting), and describes future goals related to music
Here are some key elements to include:
1. Early Musical Inspiration: Who/what inspires you to make music? What led you to join the SMF String Orchestra Program? How many years have you participated in Orchestra?
2. Technical Skills: How did you grow from a beginning noob to an accomplished string player? Did you take private lessons? If so, who did you study with? Did you participate in musical ensembles outside of school?
3. Impact of Orchestral Experience: How has music helped shape you? What skills have you learned in this ensemble that you could transfer to other disciplines (teamwork, collaboration, motivation, leadership, etc.)?
4. Future Aspirations: How do you plan to further your music education outside of SMFCSD? Do you plan to major or minor in music? How could this scholarship enable you to pursue these ambitions?
