General/Further Mathematics covers a range of mathematical topics and techniques which are used in many day-to-day applications in a wide variety of careers and in daily life.
This subject should be chosen by students wishing to take General Maths in Year 11 and Year 12. General Mathematics is aimed at developing and extending the mathematical skills of students in the areas of statistics, financial mathematics, geometry and trigonometry, number patterns, graphing and matrices. Students
are required to apply different mathematical skills and concepts to a range of situations. Students also develop skills in using technology to aid them in solving a variety of mathematical problems.
For further information please refer to page 30 of the St. Joseph's College Senior School Subject Information Handbook.
In Year 11 General Mathematics, you will encounter a variety of topics that will interest and challenge you. You will cover topics such as Statistics and Financial Mathematics, Networks and Matrices, and Algebra and Graphing. These topics will prepare you for Year 12 General Mathematics, as they will help to develop your problem solving skills and encourage logical decision making. You will also develop your understanding of the CAS Calculator, and explore the benefits of the role that technology plays in your maths education.
In Year 12 General Mathematics, you develop more skill in areas such as Financial Maths. This includes how to plan out a budget when running a business or how to calculate interest repayments on loans and investments. You will also cover Data Analysis, which will allow you to interpret graphs and make predictions about the environmental impact of climate change on farming. The skills that you will learn throughout Year 12 General Mathematics will prepare you for both a life at university or apprenticeships.
Examples of career opportunities that Further Mathematics prepares you for include Nursing, Sports Science, Aviation, and Commerce.
