The Media Arts curriculum encompasses the fields of media, art and design. In Media Arts, students create visual representations that communicate, challenge and express their own and others’ ideas, as both producer and audience. Students learn about the role of the producer and director, the contribution of the media to society, and the significance of the creative media industries. A film night at the Echuca Paramount gives the students an opportunity to showcase their hard work and effort.
Media Arts presents students with the opportunity to research, explore, and analyse various aspects of mass media. The unit involves the close analysis of images, sounds and texts and how these aspects are used by the media to create stereotypes. It also looks at the role of the media in creating representations in the news. Media in Year 10 involves both a practical and theoretical component which mirrors the VCE Media curriculum, preparing students for the variety of topics they will study in Units 1 and 2.
Students are exposed to the use of professional media equipment, as well as video based editing software.
Year 11 Media involves both practical and theoretical components. In Unit 1, students understand how the mass media represents people, places and ideas in various forms. Students gain an understanding of the Australian Media Industry and work towards creating a group project of their own in Unit 2 which emulates the style of a famous film director.
Year 12 Media further develops students' knowledge of the media, building upon skills obtained in earlier years. An analysis of two feature films sees the students learn about how Hollywood producers create films. Thus leads the students on the journey of creating their own short film or photographic project. Prior to exams, students examine how the mass media influences audiences.
