Outdoor and Environmental Studies provides students with the skills and knowledge to safely participate in activities in outdoor environments and have the information required to respect and value diverse environments. The mix of practical experience of outdoor environments with theory-based content enables understanding of human relationships with nature.
Outdoor Education presents students with the opportunity to investigate and learn about the broad topics of Outdoor Environments including Human-nature relationships, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, Conservation and management strategies, Environmental threats and impacts.
Practical Classes in Outdoor Education provide students with a great chance to develop skills in the outdoors including safety, first aid, sustainable practices and navigation.
This subject is the preferred pathway to VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies .

The unit focuses on exploring the experiences individuals have with outdoor environments and the range of factors that influence these experiences, including motivations to access and explore environments, and factors that affect an individual's ability to do this.
In this unit students will have the opportunity to hike in Wilson’s Promontory National Park, which allows them to implement links between the theoretical content, gaining insight into a variety of responses to, and relationships with, nature.

This unit focuses on the impacts humans have on the environment as well as the impacts the environment has on people. Students explore the characteristics of different environments.
While paddling down the Murray River students develop minimal impacts skills and are able to compare the characteristics of different environments. The Murray River Canoe camp further strengthens content knowledge.

Unit 3 focuses on historical and contemporary relationships with outdoor environments with an exploration of the impacts human relationships have had over time. After investigating the impacts of our relationships, we look at the sustainable use and management of outdoor environments in Unit 4. In Units 3 & 4, students paddle down the Murray River by day and camp on its banks by night. They also examine the Alpine environment during the winter which allows them to form a solid link between the theory content and practical experiences.

FAQS
Q: If I haven't done Unit 1 & 2 OES can I pick up Unit 3 & 4.
A: Yes you can, although it is preferred that you have done one of the other units to have a good understanding of the characteristics of environments and human relationships.
Q: Can I just do one unit of OES year 11?
A: It is preferred that both Units 1 and 2 are undertaken.
Q: Is it hard?
A: Any VCE subject is hard if you aren’t prepared to put the work in. Once students understand how questions need to be answered in a format that will gain them maximum marks , they tend to find it a lot easier.
Q: Is there lots of homework?
A: Yes. You can’t expect to develop a completely new vocabulary and understand challenging concepts without practice.
Q: Is there a lot of prac in this subject?
A: Unfortunately no. Although we do get to go on four camps over the two years, during class time it is mainly a theory based subject. When we are able to, we do go out into our local environment to link some of the theory work we have been looking at with the outdoors.
