English Language focuses on how we use the English language. Throughout VCE English Language, we explore the nature of language and how children acquire it and how English has changed across time. We discuss what makes language formal or informal and determine the relationship between language and identity. If you choose to study English Language to the end of Year 12, you will acquire excellent language analysis and grammatical skills which will help you with any career you choose when you graduate.
The subject English Linguistics Matter focuses on the science of the English language that we speak. It looks at why we use certain words, how different situations change the meaning of certain words, and how language has changed over time. Rather than reading a novel, English Language looks at shorter texts, such as song lyrics, newspaper articles, and TV transcripts. We explore how the language used within these texts is influenced by external factors, such as the time that it was written or what is happening in the world around the text.
Throughout Unit 1 of English Language, we explore the language that we use in our everyday lives. We look at why we use certain words, and the impact that they can have on the overall meaning of what we say. In term 2, our focus shifts from the words we use to how we learnt those words in the first place. We explore how children learn their language, and how that differs from one country to another.
Area of Study one takes you through the history of the English Language. We go back to the early 5th Century when they had not yet invented an alphabet for the language, through the early 1600s when the first ever dictionary was written, all the way to the English that we use today, and what we think English might look like in the future. Area of Study two looks at the impact that the English language has had on a global society. With so many people speaking English, the language has been influenced by and has an influence on a multitude of languages around the world.
We look at how the world around us influences the language that we use. From who we’re talking to, to the music that we listen to, our environment has a big impact on our language choices. This is an area that we focus heavily on in Units 3 and 4. We also explore the role that Australian English plays in creating our national identity. Rather than studying the language in novels, we explore the external influences on language choices in texts. From specific scenes of TV shows or movies, to newspaper articles and blog posts, to emails and text messages, the range of texts that we study will allow you to read and analyse a text in one lesson so you can develop your language analysis skills.
