Shyam Talawadekar's Journey as an On-going Learner …
1978-84… After acquiring Bachelors degree in engineering from V.J.T.I. Mumbai and a Masters degree in management from Jamnalal Bajaj (J.B.I.M.S.) Mumbai specializing in Marketing Management, during the first couple of decades Shyam Talawadekar worked with corporate houses like GODREJ (Forklift Truck Business), TATA (Music business) and Maul Eastern Group (Metal Container Business) . His career began in GODREJ where his major contribution was in raising productivity (30xTimes increase in production from 1-truck/month capacity in 1978 to 30+/month by 1982 with marginal i.e. only 1.2xTimes increase of fixed resources) using commonsense industrial-engineering-techniques (the word Kaizen was still unknown to him then).
1984-87… While working with the TATAs, he looked after setting-up a green-field plant in collaboration with CBS International, USA (now SONY BMG). This involved handling a varied portfolio right from acquiring land from MIDC (at Chikalthana, Aurangabad) to overseeing the project (including co-ordination of construction activities supervised by TATA Consulting Engineers), procurement of plant and equipment, commissioning and thereafter running their operations while at the same time establishing distribution channel across India in the position of General Manager. This assignment was his first exposure to the JAPANESE APPROACH of running BUSINESS OPERATIONS particularly since he was reporting to an accomplished senior Japanese executive Mr. Michi Yoshimura San (then the Vice President, Worldwide Operations, CBS International, USA).
1987-96… Shyam set up another green-field project at Waluj Aurangabad as an ancillary to COLGATE and handled a brown-field project at Pondicherry as an ancillary to PONDS India Ltd. (currently owned by the multi-national Unilever) while simultaneously running a couple of plant operations at Mulund and Wagle Estate Thane for M/s Maul Eastern group (as the CEO and Director on their green-field public limited outfit M/s India Containers Ltd, Waluj). This is where he applied his Japanese Management learning intensively backed primarily by self-study. Essentially it involved widening the business portfolio and LEANing the operations with a human touch to achieve enhanced business delivery. This also involved LEANing and revitalizing a sick-unit with an improved debt-equity ratio. Apart from this, within a couple of years, it resulted in improved business measures such as enhanced customer satisfaction, employee morale, productivity, quality and cost savings and at the same time reduced resources exponentially. Involvement of all the stake-holders in the journey was the key to success. This achievement was recognized by the Indian Express Group Mumbai, the Rotary Club Thane Main, TMA (Thane Manufacturer's Association) as well as the then Industries Minister Shri Leeladhar Dhake.
Having experienced the benefits that were realized in their downstream value-chain (along-with tremendous impact on reduction in their customer complaints) due to an improved Just-In-Time responsive upstream supplier, COLGATE (the customer then) gave him one of his first openings to conduct a couple of seminars for their own senior executives and their other suppliers in the form of a case study on 'Speedy Business Improvements/Transformation'. This case-study was invited and appreciated by Japan Productivity Center in 1993 in New Delhi, at a National forum organized by them in collaboration with the National Productivity Council (NPC). Such invitations continued thereafter on forums such as BMA, UK-based World Congress on Total Quality (WCTQ) forum, Mauritius Export Processing Zone Association (MEPZA) promoted National Award Forum, etc.
Shyam was also selected to be a member of the ‘Study-Group on globalization and rationalization impact on manufacturing approaches’, organized by APO, JAPAN in 1994 and 1999.
1993 onwards… During the above mentioned process, Shyam realized his dormant liking and flavor for teaching, coaching and mentoring. In fact, he devoted his part-time to management institutes like SPJIMR, NMIMS, ICFAI, etc. as a visiting faculty on subjects like Marketing Management and Operations Management. Of course this was with a touch of TOYOTA-Kaizen way of Japanese Management. Since then with the help of his team under the outfit titled www.worldOFkaizen.com (also may see https://sites.google.com/site/worldofkaizen/HOME) for over more than a couple of decades now, he has been handling coaching/consulting assignments for Indian and MNC corporate houses like CUMMINS, EATON, Tata Power, Mahindra & Mahindra, Reliance, etc.
While consulting with Mahindra-&-Mahindra Nagpur, he was involved in the process of grass-root level implementation for DEMING AWARD APPLICATION (the prestigious Japanese award for Business Excellence) that they eventually won in the year 2003.
Shyam is a registered FAAAI Expert Faculty (on Industrial Psychology and Japanese Management), AOTS Japan. The case-studies that he handled and the research that he carried out in the process is published in the form of a few books and articles.
His books titled ‘World Of Kaizen’ and ‘Visual Management’ are recommended by a few universities including Mumbai University for their B. Tech. (Production Engineering Studies), Pune University and a couple of foreign universities.
As a societal obligation, Shyam is also involved in educational-aid activities as an active committee member of Shanaishwar Foundation Trust Mumbai and a Trustee on Konkansnehi Trust Mumbai. For himself he has carved out a Goal in Life: Catalyze environment-friendly Quality Performance & Value growth! Enable more leaders to do so!! Be an on-going learner in the process!!!
