Parish Registers

The Parish Registers have as yet not been transcribed in full on this website - they feature certain families at present but this is being worked upon. Click into the sub sections in the left hand menu or the links below to view the records :

Notes :

The Registers begin 1559.  Register 1 covers 1559-1787;  Register 2 covers 1754-1810; Register 3 1771-1812.  Registers 4 and 5 are marriages 1811-1812 and 1813-1838;  Register 6 is banns 1823-1951.  Later Registers were still in the parish in 1983.

Winterbourne Abbas and Winterbourne Steepleton shared one parish register in the early days.

Separate Winterbourne Abbas registers began in 1754 for Marriages and in 1791 for Baptisms and Burials.

The Dorset History Centre (former DCRO) in Dorchester also holds Churchwardens' Accounts for 1727-1831, 1832-1921 and 1902-1965.

The only other Deposits in 1983 were the 1841 Tithe Map of apportionment and the 1920 altered Apportionment.

The 1841 map showed three major farmers and a couple of minor ones.

The cottages were tied to the farms.  Occupiers names did not appear at all.  Levi Groves was the biggest farmer with literally dozens of numbered plots and cottages in his name - most of the village!

Henry Groves had a dwelling house, grist mill, garden and Mill Meadow.
