The earlist reference to an individual that I have located to date :

1352 - Warrant of the King (Edward III) granting a charter of pardon to Thomas Morys (Morris) of Winterbourne Steepleton for the death of atte Welle and for escaping from Dorchester prison for which he has been indicted. This is made at the request of Walter de Bentelee the Lieuenant of Brittany for the service that he has done in Brittany and elsewhere. Morris has served in the King's war since the commencement of his war of France.

Endorsement (on face) : impression of Privy Seal as signification of assent.
