Cake Family

In 1625 Robert Cake of Steepleton had become unable to work. He had four daughters - Mary, Ann, Amy & Elizabeth but none were willing to seek employment to support the family. The family were supported by the parish as they were destitute. They were ordered by the court (on threat of being sent to the House of Correction - part of Dorchester prison) to find masters with one being allowed to stay and support their father. This threat was not effective as two later it was repeated for Mary Cake. (Source : Along the Winterborne by Terry & Margaret Hearing pub 2017 p32)
