Champ family

Above is the present day Champs Cottage now owned by Yuill Farms Ltd and let to a tenant.

1698 - George Champ (1668-1711) married Mary Bilke (1677-1747)

c. 1731 - John Champ (1711-1766) married Hannah Foot (1711-1772)

1722 - Mary Champ married John Coleman

1736 - William Champ married Frances Sagittary (their son Sagittary was born in 1769). Descendants of this family later settled in Canada 

1766 - John Champ (1740-1813) of Winterbourne Steepleton married Ann(e) Rooker (protestant family) in St Marys Church in Bridport. (their daughter hannah was born in Steepleton in 1769). The family left Steepleton in the early 1800's to live in Wareham, Dorset

c.1800 - Samuel Champ (1770-1834) married Sarah Budden (1777-1849)

c. 1820 - Samuel Rooker Champ (1802-1834) married Mary Hooper (1801- ?)

The Champ family were Huguenots who fled persecution by the Catholics in mid C17th France.
