WINTERBORNE STEEPLETON, a pretty village, pleasantly situated in a vale on the high road between Bridport and Weymouth, 4 miles west-by-south of Dorchester, 9 north-west from Weymouth, and 11 south-east from Bridport, containing, in 1851, 206 inhabitants and 1,783 acres; it is the Hundred of Uggscombe. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, is a long and narrow building of stone, with slate roof, and a tower with hexagonal spire, and at each corner of the tower is an ornamental pinnacle; the south porch is a curious specimen of ancient English architecture. This church, and that of Iwerne Minster, are the only ones in this county that have spires. The living is a rectory, united to that of Winterborne Abbas, value £435, in the patronage of Lincoln College, Oxford; the rector is the Rev. Martin Johnson Green, B.D.. Here is a small school for this parish and Winterborne Abbas.

WINTERBORNE STEEPLETON, a pretty village, in the petty sessional division, union and county court district of Dorchester, hundred of Uggescombe, and rural deanery of Bridport, pleasantly situated in a vale on the high road between Bridport and Weymouth, 4 miles west-by-south of Dorchester The church of St. Michael is a long and narrow building of stone, with slate roof, and tower with hexagonal spire and four ornamental pinnacle; the south porch is a curious specimen of ancient English architecture. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, united to that of Winterborne Abbas, joint yearly value £435, in the gift of Lincoln College, Oxford; and held by the Rev. Martin Johnson Green, B.D.of that college. Here is a small school for this parish and Winterborne Abbas. William Charles Lambert, esq., J.P. is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is light gravel; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are corn and pasture. The area is 1,783 acres; gross estimated rental, £1,929; rateable value, £1,708; the population in 1871 was 183.
